There’s a Time to Text and a Time to Talk

No doubt communication has changed in recent years. There was a time when your choice was pretty much face to face or on the phone.

Then along came email, followed by smartphones and the advent of texting.

Like it or love it, texting is a popular of sharing information, connecting, asking questions, providing help, and so much more. For some it’s the way they want to communicate with others, whether it’s a friend, family member or their real estate agent.

There is a time for talking and a time for textingThose individuals growing up surrounded by technology may be the heartiest of texters, with many preferring it over other forms of communication.

Others prefer more tradition phone and face to face interaction.

As texting has become mainstream, more and more people in our business are using it – perhaps realizing the advantages, or simply because they feel there’s little choice and they need to get on board, despite dragging their feet or kicking and screaming.

No doubt there some diehards who never text and flatly refuse to do so.

There IS a time to text, and a time to talk. Some things simply may not be appropriate for texting in a real estate transaction.

Sure texting is quick and convenient, but sharing detailed information, having conversations about offer and negotiation strategies, handling emotional situations, and answering complex questions that impact a transaction really should, in my opinion, be done on the phone, or in person when feasible. In addition to the difficulty of converting what should be a difficult or lengthy discussion into a series of texts, the potential for misinterpretation due to emotions, and not truly having the interactive nature of a phone conversation, might cause more problems than it solves.

I am as guilty as many others, relying on email and texting when a phone conversation would be more appropriate. I’m working on that! And having written this, I’m more mindful about it

We are in the people business. No matter how much technology we use, the reality is it’s one person helping another person with a complex, stressful, and expensive series of tasks to buy or sell a home. As we often have heard, it’s “eye to eye and belly to belly.” Try texting or emailing that!

Just sayin.’

Really good post. Even if it might be appropriate we should always ask our clients how they would like to be contacted.
