Kentlands Photowalk: Black-Eyed Susan, Rudbeckia hirta IMG 5079

The Black-Eyed Susan, Rudbeckia hirta, has been the official Maryland flower since 1918 when it was designated the "Floral Emblem" of Maryland by the General Assembly. Black-Eyed Susans are found in many of the gardens in Kentlands, our home community within the City of Gaithersburg, Maryland.

Hi Roy.  This is certainly a beautiful flower.  I am guessing that the Susan it was named for was a blonde

Roy,

That is a lovely shot of the black eyed Susan.  I have no idea that it was the flower of Maryland.  I am always learning something new, here on Active Rain. A

Since Bernie hails from Maryland, we always have a pot of black eyed Susan. I grow the vine variety in a big pot every summer. :)

Very nice!  They are a popular flower here in the Pacific Northwest, too - it's a very cheerful flower!
