So here we are late in April and already my sea legs are shaking. I can almost smell the diesel, the saltwater, and suntan oil....what a glorious recipe for summer!

Here in Beaufort there is a phenomenon known as the sandbar. We are fortunate to be surrounded by water, we can even go to the beach without leaving town...but there isn't anything quite as locally renowned as the sandbar!

Even though our water is still a bit cold (cold for us means below 70 degrees) the die hards are already anchoring up.

So what is the Sand Bar?? Well some may argue that it is a way of life, not a location.

To me it means gathering friends (human and kanine), stocking up on Fried Chicken (Publix will be happy to help you with that), boiled peanuts, possibly a cold one or two and spending the day tied up with your closest friends or those who will soon  be your closest friends. Boat to Boat, anchor to anchor...what a wonderful thing.

It comes up most days just about 200 yards from Historic Downtown Beaufort. We watch the tide charts as if it were about to announce a winning lottery number to us all.

You can be certain that on the days when the sand bar is in full force there really won't be that much going on in the business world.

As an obsessive, compulsive workaholic, I have learned to embrace the sand bar days. After all......if you can't beat em'...right?

Hundreds of people join in the festivities. There is no need for a holiday.

Kids hanging on to inflatable tubes as they are pulled by family and friends, dogs running about checking each boat for extra fried chicken, games of horeshoes that could rival the superbowl, and beautiful southern women comparing the new bikini's of the season.

Music of all flavors stream out of the anchored boats as the scent of suntan oil feels the air.

The volley ball net goes up just as the tide goes down. This is serious stuff people.

From sun up to sun down you will meet some of the nicest people around. You will be welcomed aboard the various boats of various sizes from yachts to john boats. T his goes on all summer!

There simply isn't a way of explaining this phenomenon that does it justice. So come on down, over, up or across...grab your shades and get ready to experience the Beaufort Sand Bar at its finest!
