In my previous post, I had been commenting on how spring had been taking its sweet time in Westchester, NY – but what a difference a few days can make. We had a couple of nice warm days in what has generally been a rather cool spring – and this encouraged the buds to bloom. Here are some pictures of the southern end of White Plains.
For those interested in local history, the Cherry trees along the road median of Mamaroneck Ave and Bloomingdale Rd. were the result of the diligent work of the White Plains Beautification Foundation. The idea was to create a corridor of green in summer and blooms in spring extending from the southern entry to the city and extending to the beginning of the downtown area – or about two miles.
The Beautification Foundation was the brainchild of Brian Wallach back in the late 1960s and was established around 1965. The idea was to create “The City in the Park.” Brian Wallach is something of an institution in White Plains and his founding of the Beautification Foundation is all the more significant due to the fact that he is completely blind – and has been for at least 50 years. He can be seen walking daily in the downtown area of White Plains with his seeing-eye dog leading the way.
Thanks to all this good work, there are parklets all over White Plains adding blooms to what could easily become a very dank space if left strictly to the developer’s eye. The “Adopt A Park” program has been around for 22 years and has been responsible 50 adopted gardens throughout the city particularly in the downtown area. I will be showing photos of the results during the spring and summer months.
Happy Spring Everyone!
