Do You Remember Where You Were 52 Years Ago When Kennedy Was Shot?

John F Kennedy AssassinationDo you remember where you were when you heard President Kennedy was shot and had died 52 years ago, today, on November 22nd, 1963? I still remember it as if it was yesterday. 52 years ago, today, I was  15 years old, a sophomore in high school, and was in a biology lab class when someone came in to announce that the President had been shot and had died. As I was attending a parochial high school, I remember quietly filing out with all my classmates to the school's chapel for prayers for the President and then an early dismissal of school.

I don't think anyone of us who were of a certain age in 1963 have ever forgotten where we were and how we felt when we heard this news. To this day, I believe that our nation's innocence was shattered on November 22nd, 1963.

My impressions of that day and the days to follow through the funeral events are also very clear today in my mind's eye:

  • I remember how quiet we all were on the bus rides back home from school. And as we travelled via New York City public buses, the quiet on the buses was truly overwhelming.

  • I remember how quiet a bustling city like New York became for the next four days. Looking out our living room windows, all I could see was empty streets.

  • In a home where TV watching was hugely rationed, I remember how our TV went on and stayed on for the next several days. And because in those days, most people had black and white TV's, the broadcasting in grey tones truly matched the grey and sad mood of that weekend. It truly felt as if the world had gone grey. And it didn't matter what your political affiliations were.

  • I remember the funeral procession, I remember little John Kennedy saluting his father's casket, I remember the lighting of the eternal flame, I remember Jacqueline Kennedy's dignity throughout.

  • I remember going through those days feeling as if I was living in some dream state, as if what I was watching was surreal and that I would wake up and things would go back to what they were a few days earlier.

52 years later, I'm still amazed at the clarity with which I remember that weekend and my overwhelming feeling of quiet, sadness, and greyness. And as I think back on my life, I've realized there aren't all that many events (outside of personal ones like a wedding, death of a parent) that remain so crystal clear in my mind as to where I was when an event occured. For me, this was the first such event, followed by the assassination of Robert Kennedy, the explosion of the Challenger, the first walk on the moon, and 9/11.  And now, we can attach the horrors of the Paris shootings on November 13th to this list.

Regardless of your political affiliation, President John F Kennedy's voice was a truly inspirational voice for its time. And in many ways, that voice has transcended its time. To this day, the only inauguration speech I can recite pieces of or even remember content from is that of John F Kennedy. I recently listened to it again and could only marvel at the timelessness of its message.

Remembering those days, today, 52 years later, I'm wondering how this event will be acknowledged 25 years from now. In another 25 years the people who lived through that event will probably be in the minority due to age. It will truly be "old" history to many who will be alive in 25 years. I am still amazed to think about how many of the people of that time are now gone--because it doesn't seem as if more than half a century has passed. Today, 52 years later, I still feel an overwhelming sadness and sense of loss and a lot of "what if."

Do you remember where you were 52 years ago when you heard President Kennedy died?

Yes, I definitely remember.  I was working at my first job in an insurance office in the heart of Sacramento.  I remember a property manager working in the real estate section of our company was sitting at his desk listening to a radio.  Usually there was music playing.  But, he suddenly stiffened, and said, "President Kennedy has been shot."  The next hours until closing were spent with a number of us intermittently sitting around that desk listening to the news as it transpired.  Such a horrible day!

I was too young to remember, but visited Dealey Plaza in 1980. The motorcade was just seconds from getting on to the freeway.

Olga Simoncelli ~ good morning, Olga... I'm sure that the assassination of a president was shocking to the Soviet citizens, where their leaders were so "protected."

Kathy Streib ~ hi Kathy, that time was probably as close to 24/7 cable news as one could get in the 1960's. I remember when tv just stopped at 1am.

I was just a twinkle in my mothers eye in 1963 as I wasn't born until 1975. I remember watching the Challenger space shuttle explosion live when I was in school and of course was watching the news just as the second airplane flew in to Tower #2 on 9/11.

Nicole Doty - Gilbert Real Estate Expert ~ good morning, Nicole. In 1963, I suspect you weren't even yet a twinkle in your mother's eye! It will be interesting to see how 50 years after the Challenger disaster and 9/11 you will remember those days.

Nina Hollander One of my favorite comedians is Mort Sahl. He was a friend of JFK. He had a daily TV show in L.A. in the 60s and 70s. His show morphed into an analysis of everything known about the assassination. It was sad, but enlightening.

I remember the quiet too!  Only the sound of the voice on the radio was heard, as the events unfolded.  The assassination happened on a Friday.  I went home from work that day, and early on Sunday morning I was up watching television, when I saw the killing of Oswald by Jack Ruby, live as it happened.  I jumped from my seat and couldn't believe what I had just witnessed.

Myrl Jeffcoat ~ I thought I read somewhere a long time ago, Myrl, that the killing of Oswald was the first such "live" event on TV.  I think many of us who saw it weren't sure right away what actually happened.

Definitely remember, Nina Hollander.   Almost more than the TV watching, the drums muffled as they marched ... John John saluting, was the emotions felt.  I was only 6 at the time, but the emotions and feelings from those days are unmistakenly their own.  They just permiated everything for a very long time.  Those feelings come rushing back quickly on the anniversary and upon seeing historic footage.  Hard to explain to someone that didn't live through it ...

Hi Nina Hollander

I was attending elementary school at the Air Base in Minot ND and the Air Police showed up and starting taking all the kids home while frantic parents double parked to grab their kids. The base was sealed shut and the school was closed for days. I stayed home with my mother and watched TV about the assassination. I didn't see my dad for weeks as the crews took off to unknown locations. Several days later they allowed wives and children to leave the base in cars and go somewhere else but my mother chose to stay. I was only 10 yrs old and very scared but felt horrible for Mrs. Kennedy and her kids.
