New Mandatory Water Restrictions for Carlsbad

Will be the Toughest in San Diego County

San Diego County implemented mandatory water restrictions in response to our serious drought, perhaps the worst in years, in 2014.

Carlsbad imposes new watering restrictionsCarlsbad has now reportedly implemented the toughest water restrictions in San Diego County, reducing our landscape watering to just 1 day per week for no more than 8 minutes per watering station (for customers of the Carlsbad Municipal Water District).

But I've not seen any official notice as yet from the City of Carlsbad - perhaps in the next bill?

The new restrictions will take effect December 1 and are reportedly needed to meet the state-mandated overall 28% reduction in water use.

Even numbered homes can use sprinklers on Mondays (this includes condo and apartment complexes as well as businesses), and odd numbers on Tuesdays.

Violators face a fine of $150 for the first offense and $500 for a repeat offense.

We’ve seen a good number of homes where they have simply stopped watering at all, and lots of xeriscape landscaping and more artificial turf has been installed. We’re hopeful that El Nino will bring plenty of rain and will ease the drought conditions. Time will tell.

All that said, there have been lots of complaints from residents regarding lack of enforcement of violators, while others have received warning notices. And as noted, I've not seen any official notice and the City website still says watering is permitted 2x per week. Some even question whether the drought is that significant here in Carlsbad. There are also concerns about all the new permits for housing in the face of the drought conditions, as well as the proposed mega mall still planned for Carlsbad (stay tuned as supposedly there is now going to be a public vote based on the recent push for a referendum).

You can learn about other ways to conserve water on the San Diego County Water Authority website. Another useful water conservation resource is Water Smart San Diego County.

Ditto up here in SF Bay.  An audit on water waste, the winner was an Oakland A's executive who used 6,000 gallons of water a day. Water Hogger

The other guy has a 1200 sf with no yard and 4 residents. He had a water leak.

I think the HOA and commercial are converting their lawn to drought tolerant as they will unlikely to relax the watering requirements.

I've heard some pretty interesting stories about water restriction violators! LA celebrities have been a hot topic online and in the LA Times

We are seeing more drought tolerant landscaping in our city as well, along with a few HOAs

That is just so sad.  I hope Mother Nature jumps in and helps out.

We are all hoping El Nino will, in fact, happen. We have have more rain already but not enough to make any real difference.
