Ok while I was reading over the local paper and came across a article about a "RAMP FESTIVAL". So I'm thinking what is a ramp festival so I read on to learn that it is something to eat. So I have checked around to see what in world is a ramp.

Now I have lived in the south all of my life and I have never eaten a "ramp" and still not so sure I want to, so to all of my southern friends here on AR, I would love some feedback on this.

OK....so after I did a Google on Ramps, here is a little info I found.

 Ramps: Wild Leeks of Appalachia

As one of the first plants to emerge in the spring, ramps were traditionally consumed as the seasons first "greens." They were considered a tonic because they provided necessary vitamins and minerals following long winter months without access to fresh fruits and vegetables. Ramps are pleasant to eat and taste like spring onions with a strong garlic-like aroma. They are often prepared by frying in butter or animal fat with sliced potatoes or scrambled eggs. They are also used as an ingredient in other dishes such as soup, pancakes, and hamburgers. They can also be pickled or dried for use later in the year.

OK...now I know what they are...but how do they taste. If you have had the pleasure of eating Ramps, please give me your thoughts. Not sure how me being a Little Ga Peach....how I missed this one!

OK everybody...I do have a update on these special ramps...

I was told (by someone who has actually ate them) that they taste pretty good but the smell stays with you for several days, so if you ever do decide to eat any, be prepared for people to stay away from you for a few days.

I still would love to hear from anyone else!

Thanks

Very interesting.  I have never heard of a ramp either.  Look like green onions, though.  I'd defintely give them a try.

I haven't heard of ramp either. They sound good. I like onions and garlic. I wonder if they just smell like garlic or if they have some garlic flavor too.

Hi Patty...I'm a transplanted Connecticut Yankee so perhaps that explains my reaction when I read the title.   I thought you were talking about handicap ramps [ever the REALTOR] and I thought, "Shucks yes, we do that up north too."

Now who knows maybe ramps are growing in my yard!  Are they wild?

Cheers,

Kathleen

Ah Kathleen-that is too funny. When I did a google search last nite, that is what mostly pulled up too. I think they do go wild, but I don't know for sure. If I ever try them....I'll let you know. Thanks for the cute comment!

Planet Organics has sent me Green Garlic, wonder if it's the same.  It basically looked like a leek and tasted like garlic & onion.  It was really good.

I've never heard of them either, they look more like a spring flower.  I've never even seen them in a recipe.

Patty, I've never heard of ramps after 20 years in Virginia either. We do get the wild onions that grow in the yard but I don't think I've ever seen the leaves of this plant before. Thanks for the info.

Well Dale...finally someone who has had the famous "ramps"...I'm just so-so on the leeks, so not too sure I'll like those ramps or not. They had a big festival close to Blue Ridge the other day...guess I should have gone and checked it out first hand huh.....

And you are very welcome sir! Have a great day!

I haven't had leeks either. I am surprised that it has taken so long to find someone that has eaten ramps. I still wonder what they really taste like and how they are used in recipes.

Julie- I bet our Inspector Dale can tell you, and maybe we can find others who know as well.

I saw the Ramp Festival on t.v.  it was hilarious.  I wish that I could try them too.

04/30/2008 09:10 PM by Lisa Marie Thomas (Prudential)

Julie-We will just have to find us some "ramps" and try them????

Lisa Marie-I should have gone to the festival that was not to far from Blue Ridge...maybe next year!

04/30/2008 10:22 PM by Patty Ledford-Your N. Ga. Mountain Agent -The Ledford Team-Blue Ridge, Ga. (EXIT Realty Mountain Properties)

I don't know about ya'll...but if what I hear is correct..if you eat these ramps, you smell for days. No one wants to be around you...that could be bad huh.

05/03/2008 10:05 PM by Terry Ledford-Your Ga. Mountain Realtor (EXIT Realty Mountain Properties)

I wonder where you would buy them and if they would be hard to find in Idaho Falls, Idaho or Vernal, Utah.

05/03/2008 10:43 PM by Julie Kippen Vernal Utah Real Estate (Century 21 Dart Realty)

Julie-I have no idea where I would find them here in the North Ga Mountains, but I bet they are around.
