Back-End Diagnostics and Repair

Many of you may be aware of the recent destructive hacking attacks on several AR Bloggers that totally destroyed their blogs and sites.

The now-infamous Sunday Night Massacre took out the blogs and blogsites of about 20 Tomato bloggers--all for no apparent reason.

We all spent the week and and a long weekend trying to repair the damage and get our sites functional once again.

It has been a painful and arduous process, but we managed to learn a few things in the process--things that may help other bloggers better manage their sites--at least from the back-end perspective (no ribbing of proctologists intended:-)

Hope you find these useful:

This is one I needed to read about - and thanks for sharing those links. Sorry to hear about the hackers - doesn't make sense, they should go Play somewhere else!! - Carla

Carla: Hope it helps! The hackers need to be banned from computers for about ten years.

These things make you feel that there is not protection. You have to be always alert. Really get on the nerves.

Wow, I had no idea!  Sounds like there are some evil-doers out there.  I'll take your website advice to heart, too.

Looks like some good information, Roberta. Sounds like a very long and painful process. Was the hacking through AR blogs that were linked to the owners' Tomato blogs or direct to the Tomato server?

Jeff

How ironic - I got the HACKBERRY graphic.

Tony: Just save the links. Use now or save for a rainy day:-)

Jeff:

Hackberry? Too funny!

The hacking and selective attack appears to have occurred at the server level. Not sure of AR's inadvertent or indirect involvement, but I think not.

There are now reports of lost listings, buyers and more.  The damage is serious.

Roberta, good links to share. Hope they help everyone. We need to remember that all good things come to those who wait, patiently.

I set these up and feel really stupid as I don't know the significance of these sites and what they can acheive at this time but I did record them for when the time comes. Meanwhile the site is still at Dec 2007 and I don't have any idea of where to go from here. Looks like starting over is in my future. (sigh) and a (yuk). Thanks for giving us the list.

Gena: I certainly hope so. But what can we do to help William???

William: These are tools that will better serve you when you're back up.  In the meantime, go into your site's back end and check to see if your keywords, alt titles, etcetera are still in place on the existing articles. Gena and I found damage there as well.  Please call if there is any way we can help.

Glad to hear you were able to recover all the work done over the past few years.  Scary to think someone could selectively erase individual blog sites.

Dan: It is a spooky feeling--in addition to everything else.

Read your previous post on the hackers. Do you think there is a chance that you will be able to identify who the culprits were?

Elaine:

I wouldn't know where to begin in such a cyber hunt, but there area those that do--and are.  My focus is more mundane: Getting the sites and business back up--and stopping the bleeding. Injured bloggers are reaching out to others hurt in the attack and we're all working to get back on our feet.

Thanks Roberta, You are dear for offering. They got me back around 1:00 this morning, naturally I was still up and having a fun conversation with our friend and counterpart from Sacramento. I did download today the new version of blogjet, and at least the new posts are looking easily. There is a damaged file even in the new version of blog jet "delete file" and that will take some extra time to fix but I don't have time right now. I bought some great new domains today ( good search tags type of titles) today to give my current sight a bit of a boost. We will see what all I need to do in the coming days but I am excited to be back up and able to at least evaluate where to go to next.

Roberta - thanks for the links. Every little bit helps to stamp out the bad guys.

William: I heard about the late night chat--and am glad that you are finally back up. What a relief!

I just tried to go to the widexl.com site and I got a notice that its certificate has been revoked and it's not a safe site. Anyone else get this? I have Explorer set up to alert me to expired certificates.

04/23/2008 11:46 PM by Elaine Reese, REALTOR® in central Ohio (Real Living HER, Worthington Ohio)

Elaine: It's working fine for me. Perhaps widexl was down for awhile?
