HUD celebrated their first ever "Fair Housing in America Day" on Wednesday, April 16th. Talk about it's never too early to start learning something new, this national education outreach program was designed to teach 4th through 6th grade students (including their teachers and parents) about the Fair Housing Act.

Now the more I think about this, I'm not so sure how I feel about it. On the one hand it's a pretty neat concept (the teachers and parents will be learning something too). On the other hand, I feel like we're spamming our 4th, 5th and 6th graders at too early an age.

What do you think?

From the press release:

'"The goal of ‘Fair Housing Education in America Day’ is to start the conversation about fair housing opportunities at a young age,' said Kim Kendrick, HUD’s Assistant Secretary for Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity. 'It’s critically important to teach future generations of renters and home buyers about their rights under the law.'"

And if this isn't education at an early-enough age, REALTOR® Sarah Bandy introduces us to the newest, hot young talent to hit Keller Williams!

I had something to say but it took so long 'waiting for Active Rain' that I (1) got aggravated and (2) forgot my point.  Have a great day.

Hi Ricardo,

To teach parents and teachers, that's great. For kids, except for maybe the concept that homeownership is everyone's dream and tie it in to a lesson on civil rights, not so much.  I don't think that at 45h, 5th and 6th grade our children need to be this socially conscious.  They have better things to do at this age:-)  Like be kids.

Susie: the point is you stopped by at all! And that I appreciate :D

Rebecca: I'm 100% in agreement with you. The effort is nice and I"m glad it's reaching out to the teachers and parents (a demographic that I certainly think can benefit from a little Home Ownership 101) but the kids? C'mon, that seems like unnecessary spam to me. Like the emails I get from India offering me millions upon millions.

One of the benefits is that it leads youngsters to a greater appreciation of what it means for mommy and daddy to own and pay for a home, and how difficult it is for so many. The program teaches them how to repect the disabled, minorities, the elderly. It also helps them appreciate what it means to have a place to live, especially in a foreclosure ravaged America. And, equally important, it teaches them how to start preparing for their own future, including the importance of protecting their own creditworthiness when the day arrives when they begin to seek their own shelter. Three cheers for Fair Housing Education Day and HUD! Hip, Hip, Hooray !
