Goals are Dreams with a Plan of Action... I Hit 10,000 Points!!!

Joyce Kilmer plaqueWhen I was younger, I was an avid backpacker, completing multi-day to multi-week treks throughout the Southeast and the Rockies. While the Rockies are truly magnificent, The Appalachians are among the oldest mountain chain in the world, and this has been where my heart lies.

Of the Appalachians, my favorite treks were always in Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest, just above Robbinsville, North Carolina. This area boasts some of the last virgin forest East of the Mississippi, and the largest trees in the East, with Yellow Poplars measuring 19 feet and greater in circumference. These trees can be visited on a short 2 mile loop hike with gentle terrain, and they are a most spectacular sight. My eyes always turned to the mountains above, however.

Joyce Kilmer has some of the most beautiful, difficult terrain in the Southeast. a typical short trip would usually consist of a 3 day, 40 mile jaunt, with the first leg being a 2500 foot climb in the first 5 1/2 miles up to "Naked Ground", an old Indian junction in the days gone by. We'd have a short lunch break on the saddle, and follow the lead trail across the spine of the mountain to camp at the Hangover, covering a little more than 11 miles the first day. Follow a side trail up through a 1/4 mile Rhododendron tunnel, and you would pop out onto rock outcroppings overlooking a 3000 foot precipice down to Santeelah lake to the North and onward to the Great Smokey Mountains in the distance. These outcroppings, wild creeks, vistas and views were ours alone, as on deep-woods hikes, my hiking partner(s) and I rarely saw another person for the entire time up until the point of near exit.

sunrise over the mountains              Overlooking Santeelah Lake

These journeys always began with a dream. A week or so before the excursion, I would plan out a route in my mind that I'd like to take, and then pull out my maps to more fully plan the exact route, checking mileage per day, water availability on the trail, entrance and exit points, and "escape routes", in case of injury, exhaustion or extremely severe weather. Once the specifics were planned, I'd begin gathering my backpacking gear, rechecking water filters, stove fittings, zippers, etc. to ensure that they were all working properly since storage from my previous excursion. I would gather food, maps, film, and other "fun stuff" (a bottle of wine), and pack my pack in order to check the weight. At times, I'd find myself with an extremely heavy pack (60+ pounds), and have to remove some of the less necessary items (keep the wine, ditch the water filter, and take Iodine tablets) to ensure the pack wasn't too heavy, and finish preparing to leave. I had this ritual, whether I was leading a trip or going solo.

The planning, the preparation, the trip and the debriefing (when I led a group) was all extremely pleasurable and the joy came as a result of the following:

1.Having a Dream

2. Creating a Plan of Action

3. Executing the Plan

This has been my experience in Active Rain as well. I had a dream of reaching the 10,000 point mark within my first log-on to Active Rain. My plan of action has not been nearly as rigid, but I have had some basic goals set. I have had checkpoints along the way; each 1000 points I accrue, each time I move up in my county "placement", and each time I moved up onto the next page of my State "placement" are some examples.

I have, throughout my experience thus far, realized many of the intrinsic benefits as well as the extrinsic rewards; the relationships I have formed within the community, the positive affirmation of my thoughts and feelings put forth into the community, the incredible amount of knowledge and insight that I've received from fellow bloggers, and the feeling of belonging to a community of my professional peers across North America.

My dreams and goals are still in place, however the ride has been much more pleasurable as I haven't found myself so "driven" to get to the next check-point. It has been the Active Rain community that has allowed this transcendence to take place from merely "pushing forward" to the next mark, to being able to enjoy the experience for itself. For this, I say, "THANK YOU!!!"

Now, with that being said, ONTO THE 25,000 POINT MARK!

Hello Bo and congrats on your 10,000 mark. Nice pictures on your post. I enjoy hiking in my area also, but just short day hikes!

04/22/2008 03:01 PM by Lori Franks ~ Brookings, Oregon Real Estate (Coldwell Banker~ Oregon Coast Realty)

Hi Lori, Thanks! I've been limited to day hikes, as well, since I've had kids. It is still a great adventure going out with the kids, exploring and playing "poohsticks" in the creeks!

Man I wish I were 30 years younger.  I know exactly about the hikes you mentioned.  Having grown up out west, I cheaed and got to play on God's trails.  Having worked for the US Forest Service in the southeast, I know the Applacahian trails as well.  Along about 1976 0r 1977, I was lucky enough to get paid to walk the entire Applachian Trail with a man I worked with.  Warren was retiring and we worked out a deal with Forest Service to walk it, taking pictures and notes along the way, detailing issues and generally describing conditions.  It was by far the worst and the best hiking experience I have ever had.  It took us a little over six months of cold weather on both ends, blisters, sores, etc., and yet the most wonderful scenery, wildlife, people (new friends, some of which I still stay in contact with), and of course a free vacation (as most vacations are not restful when I go).

Thanks for the pictures, memories, and new frienships and family.  Maybe Blood Mountain would be a good place to meet.  Another good day or two would be Cloudland Canyon in northwest Georgia.

Congrats on the 10,000.  I am working on it.

04/22/2008 04:38 PM by L. Wayne Denton I HAVE A HANDLE ON YOUR MARKET! ! ! ( Magnolia Signature Homes)

Hey, Wayne... That sounds awesome! I've read so much about through-hiking the AT, and in my younger days, this was yet another excursion that I wanted to take.

Blood Mountain is a cool hike; I've also done the Coosa Bald trail going out  of Vogel State Park (a nice little 12 mile loop)... A few spots were climbing hand over hand with my pack on my back up the root systems! What fun!... And I love Cloudland Canyon, just south of Lookout Valley. On one of the rim hikes, you can see the hang-gliders that took off from Lookout; watching them catch the air currents and circle for what seemed like hours! I love Cloudland in the Autumn, with the trees through the canyon a multitude of colors.

Yes, I believe we need to take off for a day hike or short overnighter (once I get my clearance from the neurosurgeon on my recent neck surgery!.... I go tomorrow for more "freedoms" offered by him)... Sounds like this would be great fun!

Hi Chuck... Thanks! Living in Minnesota, you definitely have plenty to explore. I am planning a vacation to St. Paul this summer, and hope to do some canoeing in the "land of 10000 lakes"!

Hi Debbie... Thanks! one of my favorite hikes up around your area has to be up "Old Rag" (I believe it's called... haven't been there since '98)... in Shenandoah. It's a climb up an extremely rocky mountain to some major rock formations on top. i did this hike on Thanksgiving day, and it was a beautiful (and cold) experience!

Bo - Christy is a series of novels/books and movies by the esteemed writer Catherine Marshall she was the wife of the famous Peter Marshall - theres a movie about his life story too.....thats amazing and inspirational..........Anyhow the series is a biography about Catherine's mother - who came to teach in the Appalachians as a young woman.......how the people there changed her world.....and she changed theirs.....the scenery is hauntingly beautiful......check out Christyfest.......series...:-)

What an awesome series of books! I'm surprised that I've not heard of these, as I'm an avid reader of many genre, and I really get into the Southern Appalacia books. Reviewing the site, and the area, I was pleasantly rewarded with several memories; of Cades Cove, where my first backpacking trip originated to the Nolichucky, which was my first whitewater rafting experience, to the French Broad, where I led a group of troubled teens on a whitewater canoeing trip.

A small fiction that I really enjoyed, "The Education of Littlefoot", set in the early 1900's in which an orphaned boy comes to live with his Native American grandparents, and the life lessons he (and his grandfather) learned along the way. Wonderful story, but be forewarned... a tear-jerker!

Thanks, Liz, for the recommendation... I can see a new series of books beginning!

Great pictures and inspiration.  I live ten minutes from the Pisgah National Forest in Brevard, North Carolina, and unfortunately I get caught up in life and forget sometimes what a great resource the forest is and how refreshing it is to go for a day hike.  The best thing...no cell service.

04/23/2008 09:04 AM by Isaac Allen, REALTOR, Brevard, NC area Specialist. (Exit Mountain Realty)

~  Thanks, Duane!

~  Hey, Isaac... Thanks! I've only paddled through Pisgah, I believe, down the Nolichucky, if my memory serves me? You have a wonderful playground right in your backyard... I know life can be hectic, but I encourage you to take a few hours out of your week and go play in the woods!

Bo - Your pictures are just wonderful.  I am not an outdoor person, but I enjoyed reading about your trips.  So much work, but you seem to have enjoyed it, just like your journey here.  I was happy to reach my point goal, and 'step up the ladder', but most of the times I get on AR, I don't check my points - I am anxious to see what has been posted!  Your blog is one of my favorites. Good luck on the 25K!

~  Hey, Matthew... Thanks! I look forward to some "hyper-speak" as well!

~ Hey, Virginia... Thank you very much! I sometimes have to make conscious efforts to "enjoy the ride" as opposed to pushing for the destination... I've always been so task driven, that I have to remind myself often much of the pleasure is derived from the journey, and the destination is usually the climax of the experience! I really enjoy your blogs, as well; the diversity, lightness, and heart you put into them shines through!

~  Hey, Kent... I thank you! I really appreciate the compliments... sometimes I'm not sure if my posts are very good, as when I critique them, I feel many are so disjointed that they aren't understandable!

~  Hi Matt... Thanks!

~  Hey, Kevin... This is so true... It's surprising how we sometimes create great plans, but find various reasons as to why we can't execute, isn't it?

~  Hey, Duane... You've got it! I'm more than ready to go!
