We are the Keepers of the Earth.  Sometimes we hear or see something that sort of sits on the top of our mind for a second, or a millisecond, but it doesn't penetrate, then we hear it again later and wonder what it's about. If you haven't lived in a Communist Country you might be tempted to believe what our Government tells you, or any Government for that matter.  But is it the Truth?

Earth Day 2008

I

I think most of you know that in 1997 I joined the Peace Corps and went to Romania.  One of the "disclosures" the Government gave me was one saying there were Environmental problems.....now that was an understatement.

In 4 days it will be exactly 22 years since the Nuclear Explosion at Chernobyl in the Ukraine.  That was 11 years before I went to Romania. And this was the "environmental" problem they were talking about.  I went anyway, but many times while I was over there I heard, and saw effects from this disaster. Many people knew something about the worst Nuclear Disaster in History......but mostly all they knew was that it had affected the land....and Romanians lived off the land.

On April 26,1986, a supposedly "unauthorized test" was done that caused the Explosion.  No one knew how to handle the fire, and it burned for 9 days. During this time the wind was blowing the radioactive materials into neighboring countries, as well as the towns near the plant.  The Soviet Government didn't tell people about the diseaster, and most people found out about it during their annual Labor Day Parade (A communist parade where everyone participates giving praise to the government).

While I lived in Romania I heard many stories, and one of the things I noticed was how many people were suffering from:

  • Cancer
  • Liver Problems
  • Eye Problems

and it was all blamed on Chernobyl. There is an excellent site I found from a lady that has done a photo journalism project on the area......WARNING: some of the pictures are shocking.....and as is typical of Soviet and Communist Governments they have discredited her work, but you can judge for yourself......

And if that doesn't make you worry about OUR EARTH.....this is what we're doing here in America:

Yellowstone National Park: declassifying the Grizzlies as endangered species is a big step in trying to get  Congress to allow the current administration  to drill in both Yellowstone and Alaska.....Greed plain and simple !!!  How about in New Mexico, and many many other areas where some big corporations are polluting the ground water. Strip Mining in  the Northwest (then planting  trees the size of your hand) and saying they are replenishing....or whatever they say....Greed is what I say!!!!

So today, on Earth Day, my Tuesday Truths is we all need to care about the Environment.......I never hugged a tree, but I  was concerned about the nuclear fallout from Chernobyl, and how it might affect my health.

I care about what we are doing with our greed and want to make sure we do something now before it's too late for our Grandkids and their kids........

We are the keepers of the Earth, and what we do or don't do will affect generations to come.

Today, Earth Day 2008 look around you and appreciate the beauty of Nature.  Today maybe you could plant a tree, or commit to some sort of conservation effort even if it's nothing more than putting the recylclabiles in the right bins :) :)  Today be thankful for everday that the sun rises and sets for ALL of US, on every inch of this great Earth.

Kathy -I an very happy to be the first one to comment here. I have many friends who barely escaped the nuclear disaster in Chernobyl, and I unfortunately know some who didn't. People died form cancer 5-10 years after leaving and coming to this country. You make excellent points -environment is something that concerns everyone.

Good Tuesday Kathy,
What we do today is not going to affect us so much and perhaps that is why so many people shrug their shoulders and dismiss environmental issues.  But it will affect our grandchildren and their children and I care about them whether I'm here or not!  Let's take responsibility.

Kathy, Chernobyl is scary in so many ways.  The fact that it happened and that the government doesn't think it is important to tell anyone?  The scary thing about that puzzle is they had the power to keep it a secret.  Anyway, I could go on and on about all of that.  We do need to tread lightly, if we all joined in even a little bit it will make a difference.  Happy Earth Day to you!

Kathy - Wow, I actually didn't know that you were in the Peace Corps and went to Romania.  There's not a soul alive that can convince that taking care of our earth...our enviroment, isn't a grand position and practice.  Taking the beauty and splendor we live in for granted is foolish in my opinion.

Kathy, the more I read you, the more connections I see that we have in common. One of my best friends is from Romania, I've heard so many wicked stories.

As for earth day, it's hard to imagine anyone not being aware of how quickly our planet is going downhill. Not just the obvious stuff like melting glaciers, increasing prices for oil, gas and wheat but also the effects that come along with it such as...

The recent food riots happening in various parts of the world, etc... I'm a news junkie so I probably read/see more of this kind of stuff than I should but, I'm also an optimist with great faith in our ability to fix the mess we've all made.

I can't imagine the pain you saw there with families affected by the explosion. I remember it very well as I was in high school and in current affairs class and we ended up staying extra classes to discuss the disaster and if it could happen here. (We weren't really around when the Three Mile Island disaster happened.)

That was a big taste of reality when the teacher brought that up after 30 minutes of us debating if it could happen here.

Faina-I too am glad you're first.....I forgot you lived there, and if anyone knows that Governments can and do cover up many things, you would know.  You also know that what Elena wrote is more than likely true, and her pictures are unbelievable.  I spent more than an hour just reading and looking at the pictures.....and tyring to figure out what that area will look like in thousands of years......and I was thankful for the moment of silence, and the ringing of the bells at the UN for Chernobyl a few years ago......

This is something that we shouldn't forget...

Cynthia- Your point is well taken.....if people don't see the immediate consequences of their behaviors, well "out of sight out of mind."  Le's take responsibility.....oh wouldn't that be nice :)  And we can also say enough is enough to the people making Billions of Dollars Profit while helping to destroy the Environment.  Don't get me started....this is just a quick response to say....Yes, let's work together !!!!

Audrey- Yes, as citizens of any country we need to hold our elected officials accountable, look at their motives, etc.  It was a different story in the Ukraine in 1986......better not to even go there :)

Jason- Oh, I can think of a few people that don't appear to care about the consequences to the environment.....and they are the ones that are racking in the money.....all the while trying to rape our lands even more than they already have.  If anyone allows Yellowstone and Alaska to be drilled.....:(

marti-ahhh yes it is appearing we have several things in common including being a news junkie :)  The riots over food got to me.....it just isn't in my make-up to think a Dollar is more important than a Life.  The mess we're in is so man made, and yes I think we can get out of it....but we need more people to wake-up their social consciousness' s.    PS where is your friend from?

Todd-Living in a "Former Communist" country is an experience in itself.....and yes, I was appalled at the medical system, and the lack of education in certain areas for the people.  So much Cancer....and I have never seen so many people with liver problems......it was taken for granted, and that was the sad thing to me.

Kathy - Thanks for sharing another personal post with group. I too know some people that are suffering the acid rains from that time period. It is tough.

Kathy, That has to be the saddest post and pictures I've seen in a long time and I'm so glad you put it out there.  I can't even imagine living there and watching all those people, many of whom still suffer today.  We really need to wake up and see what we're doing but I see too that nothing happens....I read today they are taking several last acres of cherished farmland that is left on Long Island...for building.  We can do our part but the goverment apparently needs pressure from all of us.

Great post on Earth Day Kathy. We get focused on our own small inch of earth and lose touch with the fact that we are all one. I wish every day could be Earth Day.

Hi again K, my Romanian friend is from Bucharest. She came to Montreal about 12 years ago with her daughter, a suitcase and $200. She began her life here as a waitress and is now a research journalist at the CBC (our version of CNN).

I so admire people like that, talk about guts & courage. I wouldn't go on vacation with $200 let alone change my life and move to another country. Nite...

Carole-I am so glad someone went to that site.....the story needs to be told, and known by more than just the people in that area.  The pictures reminded me of things not real......and the time-line before the land is safe again shocked me.  Yes, we do need to hold our Government more responsible......I am optimistic, but also a realist.

Robin- Thank you, and you are right we mostly just pay attention to our own little piece of the world.....in fact I would settle for that much from some people :)

marti- I know several people that left with not much more than that......it always gives me inspiration. Your friend left the year before I went there.....apparently it was easier to get to Canada....anyway, thanks for the info.....your friend will have many stories to tell that's for sure :)

Kathy,

I take heart in the fact that the children and grandchildren are learning the way.  My children came home today from school with so many vows and pledges about what they were going to do to help Mother Earth.  My daughter is ditching plastic water bottles and my son wants displaced animals to seek shelter in our backyard.  I told him that he could start smaller by shutting off lights and tv.'s when not in use.

Kathy, I get so choked up reading about this. I have a sister who has done a lot of 'camp' work for cancer children (worked for years with Paul Newman's 'Hole-in-the-Wall' program, here in the States &  in Ireland). Until recently, she'd made several trips to Romania to organize groups of kids, Chernobyl victims, to travel to these 2-week camp experiences. Many of their afflictions were nerve-related damage. She recently told me that it's only been in the past 2 years that a baby has been born again in that country without deformity or nerve damage since the Chernobyl incident. And this "incident" was only one that happened to leak out to the world, due to its enormous impact. It's VERY scary. We need to be vigilant with our awareness and thinking. One of the things I like about your posts is the fact that you nudge people along in a kind way. You invite them to really think, to look differently at the world around them. This kind of 'interference' is essential for change, for healing. Thanks for another great post!

Beautifully written to let us know that awareness is key to helping out ...even a little at a time will help.

What happened at Chernobyl would be analogous to a nuclear reactor disaster in Iowa or Nebraska or Kansas.  The Ukraine was and is the heart of agriculture in the Soviet Republics.

Imagine what would happen to America's food supply if a disaster like this one were to take place in the heartland of the U.S.

Rebecca-Yes, I love that the schools do something nice for Earth Day....and would like to see more education every day on this :)  And gee mom, shutting off the lights is not the same as a backyard full of animals.....LOL :)  Kids are so cute, too bad they grow up...(just kidding).

Mara- Wow....I already like your sister and haven't even met her :)  Is that camp still operating?  How would someone get involved if they wanted to?  Getting people to be aware of something is actually easier than getting them to do something, or to change their mentality.  When I was doing my term in the Peace Corps, my boss kept saying that anyone can build a bridge and people see it as progress.  But when you are trying to change mentalities you can't see it, and it is harder than building the bridge.  I always remembered that since I like to see the fruits of my efforts.....unfortunately this isn't always possible :)

Sally-yes, change starts wih one person at a time.....one penny at a time, and one thought at a time.

Eric-I don't think too many people actually have given this thought. So many times we think things like this don't, or can't, happen here......but they can.  And as you said, what would happen if we lost half of one of those States forever, and all the land that we depend on for food?  Think of the people.....what did Elena say....out of 3,500 that went back to live in the villages...only 400 are still alive.  Now those are some scary numbers.

And just to show how small the world is....look there are 17 comments here....and 4 of us know people effected, or have been in that area.  4 out of 17.....that's a lot if you ask me for a disaster that happened half way across the World!!
