Iguanas Are Invading Florida

One of Florida's biggest problems is the spread of Exotic Species. From various types of plants, bugs, and animals.

In Cape Coral (Which is in Lee County), we have a big problem with "Nile Monitor Lizards". These lizards grow up to 7ft in length and will consume anything they can get into their mouths.... Birds, Fish, Cats and Dogs ... just to name a few. Cape Coral spends thousands of dollars trying to control these lizards, but the reality is ...... They are here to stay.

On the island of Boca Grande (which is in Lee County), they are having a huge probelm with Spiny Iguanas. The community has even incorporated a "Lizard Tax" as a way to fund the removal of these lizards. Although this Lizards are not dangerous as the Nile Monitor Lizards, they do disrupt the eco system on the island. The lizards eat other animals and plants and cause other problems. And, they are here to stay also. The best we can do is to learn to coexist with these animals the best we can.

To the left is one of these little guys hiding in the foliage by one of the islands lighthouses.

We are also hearing reports of the Iguanas showing up in other areas of Lee & Collier Counties.
