Would a Wynwood ‘Mini-City’ change the face of the arts district?

Have you seen the news? Earlier this month, The Miami Herald reported that the entrepreneur/developer Moishe Mana wants to build a 24-acre ‘mini-city’ in Wynwood Art District. The plan, he told the paper, would be to take an abandoned strip of property in the neighborhood and build new buildings for tech and arts uses. He claims he wants to “make something out of nothing.” But I don’t think Wynwood is nothing or has been nothing for the past five years.

It’s not actually clear from the story whether Mana is requesting permission from the city to build residential properties as well, but that’s one thing Wynwood desperately needs. I know tons of people who would love to live in a loft-style apartment building in Wynwood if one exists. There’s the famous Wynwood Lofts, which does have one unit available for rent right now, but generally the building is packed full. There just aren’t enough units to meet demand.

But to say that brand new buildings would redefine an area that once was a den for artists drawn by low rent prices is an understatement and in some ways is also already an irrelevant conversation. The Wynwood that was is probably already gone. There’s even a Ducati store in the neighborhood now. Wynwood will always be hip. It will always draw Miami’s most interesting and intelligent youths. It just won’t be quite as rugged and authentic as it once was. If Mana wants to diversify the arts district and shape it for the next generation, I welcome progress.
