Don't Let a Fire Ruin Your Holiday
From a colleague in Tennessee, Debbie Reynolds, comes these timly reminders - fire safety needs to remain at the top of our minds during these hectic days. Stay safe, everyone!
Don't Let a Fire Ruin Your Holiday
The heaters are on and fires are in the fireplaces. It's the time of year we hear about house fires and tragic news about homes burning to the ground. It is even more sad that it is at Christmas and people become displaced and lose precious family treasures, lives and memories.
People are distracted and don't always do the smart thing. Items get too close to fireplaces and heaters and they can ignite. A home can be ablaze in a matter of minutes.
Cooking fires are the most common and with the holidays so many of us are in the kitchen baking and cooking for family and friends. Be careful and watch out for hot skillets and loose clothing that could catch on fire. Keep a fire extinguisher close by.Watch for sparks and hot coals from the fireplace. When cleaning the firebox don't ever put coals in a cardboard box. Use a metal container in case a tiny ember is still live. Have your chimney inspected and make sure it is safe. A fire can start from the smallest ash or spark.
Christmas trees get brittle and dried out especially the live ones. Lights need to be checked to be sure they are safe and not left on for long periods of times. Turn lights off when not at home. Cords can short out and cause electrical fires. A fire can start simply from overheating.
Candles are burned more during the holidays and in a moment destroy a home. During a Christmas dinner in Clarksville a candle caught a decorated tree on fire and the whole house was lost. It was on the porch and the wind blew it over. Hundreds of thousands of dollars went up in smoke.
Using multiple extensions cords or cords not properly rated can overload a circuit and cause a fire. Do not use interior cords for outside purposes.
Even leaving cords plugged in without being turned on can create a fire hazard. I know of someone who lost their home from a Christmas arrangement that simply plugged into an outlet. It shorted out at the wall plug. The house burned to the ground.
It makes for a sad Christmas to have it disrupted by a house fire. Losing a home or having a fire is bad anytime of year but this time of year is even worse. Even though insurance may replace everything, life may be lost. It can be avoided with taking precautions and being careful and attentive.
Fires can start in moment and in all kinds of ways. Consider leaving small appliances unplugged when not in use, check cords for safety and use extra care in the kitchen and around fireplaces. It is much easier to keep a fire from starting than trying to put one out.
Have a Safe and Happy Holiday Season. Don't Let a Fire Ruin Your Holiday.
