Will The Fed Raise Rates? The Countdown Begins....

Let the countdown begin. The Fed’s decision on rates is Dec 16. As it stands now, traders in federal funds rate futures contracts are pricing a 75% chance the Fed will raise the fed funds rate come Dec. 16. That's the highest odds given for 2015.

Confidence in a rate hike was further bolstered by Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta President Dennis Lockhart saying he favors raising the fed funds rate this month. “Absent information that drastically changes the economic picture and outlook, I feel the case for liftoff is compelling,” Lockhart said.

The rate hike’s final obstacle is November's employment numbers. If November saw 200,000 or more new jobs created, we'd expect to see the odds of a rate increase rise above 80%. We expect to see 200,000 or more new jobs for November.

What this means, is that the rates we have today might be the best rates we see for a while.

Good morning Winston,

There are so many scenario's with the rate increase; oil pricing plummeting, stocks and bonds falling and a housing market that could go either way with a low supply for sale.

Make yourself a great day.

Winston,  I have no doubt that the Fed will raise rates now. I could be wrong, but somehow don't think so.

Winston Heverly and Nina Hollander you both need to heed the comment of Raymond E. Camp and then add in the pressure from Europe to keep rates the same so that we don't crash their fragile economy.

BTW Oil is at a seven-year low. That does not bode well for the economy of the world.

Bill Roberts ~ Bill, I don't disagree with your assessment at all. I just think the pressure on the Fed to raise rates could well be hard to overcome. That being said, I don't see a big bump up in rates, but a very marginal one.

Bill Roberts It does not look good for the bond or futures market at the moment either.

Actually, the futures for metals might be a very good investment right now, Raymond E. Camp if the maturity is far enough out.

Even a small rate hike will have very deleterious results Nina Hollander but the Fed is very political, so who knows what they will do.

Bill Roberts ~ bingo, Bill! Politicizing this is what will cause issues.
