John Orley
Thanks for stopping by and taking time out of your day to read my post. My intent is to put a smile on your face. I hope that you will go away with some information you may have forgotten about or did not know. Now sit back and enjoy the post for the day.
John Orley was born in Winchester, Kentucky back in 1899 to John and Eleanor. I could not find anything about his childhood but I can tell you he went to the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music where he played the violin.
In 1918, he attended Vanderbilt University where he met Robert and from there as they say, the rest is history. In 1924 he moved to New York City and worked part time as a janitor to make ends meet. BTW you may know John Orley better as John Orley Allen Tate. Allen was an American poet, essayist and Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress from 1943-44. Some of his writings include The Mediterranean and Other Poems, The Winter Sea, Two Conceits for the Eye to Sing and The Swimmers and Other Selected Poems and of course Ode to the Confederate Dead. He died in Nashville, Tennessee in 1979
