lightSantee Cooper, our local power company will be giving away 12 free CFL light bulbs today to all of their customers.  The company is trying to promote the use of CFL bulbs to help reduce the amount of energy needed to run.  To pick up these bulbs, visit their location on Oak Street in Downtown Myrtle Beach from 2-5PM.

Some of the benefits they state are:

  • last 10 times longer
  • Use 75% less Energy
  • Produce 75% less heat, lowering cooling costs
  • Will save consumer $30 in energy over the life of one bulb.

I have recenty replaced all of these bulbs in my home with CFL Bulbs and they have really cut down the heat in my home.  I have also noticed a drop in my monthly electric bill which is wonderful  If you have not tried these, I would strongly suggest looking into these.  If you are in the Myrtle Beach Area, go by there today and get your free 12 pack!

The one thing to remember about these bulbs is that while they are definately more efficient than incandescent bulbs, they contain mercury and in the event that one of them breaks, you have to be ready and able to deal with the spill of this dangerous ....very dangerous substance!

Yes they contain mercury.  One lightbulb can contaminate up to 6000 gallons of fresh water.  Imagine when the 400 million go to landfills years from now.
