Imagine running one of the most demanding trail races in the U.S –the Bridger Ridge Run - 20 miles along the knife edge of the Bridger Mountain range in Bozeman, Montana gaining 6,800 feet and descending 9,500 feet over the course of the race. Now imagine you are 82 years old.
That was the case for Bob Hayes who completed the grueling race in 2009 at the age of 82. Here in Bozeman, it’s not uncommon to find people well over 65 flying down the ski hills, trail running or backpacking far into the wilderness. In fact, whether it’s with an extreme race like the Ridge Run, horseback riding, water aerobics or daily walks, many seniors in Montana maintain a very active lifestyle.
According to a recent study done by the UnitedHealth Foundation’s America’s Health Rankings Senior Report, Montana has a low obesity rate among seniors (7th in the United States). This is certainly apparent in and around Bozeman where seniors are often involved in a variety of physical activities thanks to the close proximity to mountains and trail systems as well as the many organizations and establishments that offer group activities and classes for seniors.
