If you are one of the thousands of people who have decided to exercise your Second Amendment “right to bear arms” then you owe it to yourself and those around you not only to learn how to use your weapon but also to become educated on the laws for your particular state governing when and how you can use deadly force. On the other hand, if you’re one of the thousands on the other side of the fence and you have chosen NOT to carry a firearm, that’s ok with me too! This post is NOT the place to rant and rave about the pros and cons, regardless of which side you’re on.
Good. You’re still with me. Bill and I recently completed the 8-hour course required to apply for a Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP) for our state. The day started off with 2-½ hours covering the law portion with such topics as where you can and cannot carry and when you can and cannot use deadly force. This is very important to know! We learned the parts of our weapons and how they function as well as how to handle them safely.
After lunch came the fun part - USING them! We spent time “practicing” how to draw from our holsters as well as the proper way to hold them, aim them and fire them. We even practiced a stance for “retreating” when someone is too close and, of course, re-holstering. On the range we were required to fire 30 rounds from varying distances with a certain (high) percentage hitting the target. I am pleased to say my first shot hit dead center and the grouping for the remainder of my shots was close enough to make me very happy. I also hit the target with 100% of my shots fired.
If you are in the Western North Carolina or Northeast Georgia area I highly recommend our instructor, Sam Hogsed. Not only is Sam a great instructor, he’s a fellow agent here in our RE/MAX office. If you’re interested in more information on his classes, call, text or email me and I’ll send you the information.
In the meantime, stay safe!
Cyndi
PS - Remember this isn’t the place to express your views one way or the other on carrying a concealed weapon. HOWEVER, if you know of a great safety course in your area PLEASE feel free to share that information in the comments below.
