How to Keep Your Home Safe from Intruders

No matter the time of year, it is incredibly important to keep your home safe from possible burglar encounters. Without the proper precautions, protection, and education you may be placing not only your investments but your entire family in harm’s way. So what can you do to increase your security around and within your home?

1. Consider purchasing items that recognize movement or a passerby. If someone is checking on your home and is immediately halted by a censored light, one may seriously reconsider their possible encounter in fear of being spotted.

2. Try to keep your house from seeming like you haven’t been there in a while. If you have mail stacked up, newspapers outside, or additional items this may serve as a clear indication that no one is keeping tabs currently on the home making it a much easier target.

3. If you are going out of town avoid letting people know that your home will be unattended! It’s often fun to tell coworkers and/or friends about your future travels but try not to draw attention to your home being unguarded. It doesn’t hurt to mention that someone will be staying there or you’ve installed cameras even if it may not really be true!

4. Don’t forget the obvious. The easiest way for intruders to gain access to your home is if you’re the one who gives it to them! Create an evening routine in locking all doors and windows. Why wait until right before bed? Once you’re in for the night, do it right away so that way if you do happen to get distracted or fall asleep, you will still be keeping yourself from risk.
