Just couldn't resist reblogging this post by Elizabeth Weintraub. I just spent the past week with her looking at homes on the Big Island of Hawaii. Between us, it also gave me the excuse to go there and have a great time with a fellow Activerainer. While there, Elizabeth wrote several personal blogs that you MUST read. PS. She did not think of herself as a "buyer". What do you think?

I am very grateful to Hella Rothwell for sticking with me to buy a home in Hawaii. As I mentioned to her a few days ago, she took a long shot with me. I mean, granted, she was in Oahu anyway visiting her family but she still hopped a plane, rented a car and took time out of her schedule to show me homes in Big Island when I did not present any qualifying factors.

For example, I had no preapproval letter. It didn't even cross my mind, if you can believe that. And when it did, I simply said if I find a home to buy, I will get the letter. I did not want the hassle of filling out a loan application, having my credit pulled, all of that in case it was in vain because maybe I found nothing to buy. (You can see how my attitude shifts when I am NOT the agent, LOL.) I also was not really "planning" to buy a home in Hawaii, but I would not turn down the opportunity if the right one presented itself. Oh, and did I mention my husband absolutely did NOT want to buy a home in Hawaii and reminded me of this daily once I told him I would look at homes.

My idea was Hella could show me homes and I could get a feel for neighborhoods and pricing, so that when I am ready to buy, I would of course call Hella to write an offer. I shared these facts with her and made no commitment to buy a home; yet, Hella jumped in and enthusiastically toured homes with me anyway. When I've traveled for work and fun, I've often stopped in a local real estate office.  I identify myself as an agent and state my intentions.  I look at some flyers and maybe tour an open house, but I don't bother an agent unless I know them and they expect me.

Yes and since my wife and I are looking in Palm Beach County Florida this Christmas for a second home I sure hope the agent understands that we probably are just starting out and next year is our goal.

Yes it is good to do a "looksey" I do it as a "long term investment" might be a "waste" but in the long run it could pay off... yours did in the short run...

Hella - It depends on the situation. I have shown homes to people who are not pre-approved, or are only considering the thought of buying a new home. I don't mind showing them what is going on in the market, especially if I have a relationship with them, and know that they will use me when they are ready to buy.

However, working with a perfect stranger may be a little different. I may not be as trusting, and may not be willing to do as much if I know they have done nothing on their end (no preapproval), and are not exactly sure they are ready to buy.

You are right, I would do a bit of background checking before taking on "a perfect stranger". But if I am convinced you want to buy a home on the Big Island of Hawaii or any other Hawaiian island, I will be there for you. In fact, that is a 'niche' I will be marketing to.

Even though Elizabeth might not have thought she might not purchase at this time, I felt it was worth the trip from all indications. And she is most certainly qualified! And we had a blast together!
