It's Not About How Much You Can Earn, It's About Balance

Goals to include balanceGenerally speaking most people will tell you to set your goals high and stretch yourself. If you made X this year surely next year you can make X++.  I say it is not all about the money or even the numbers. I think it is about quality and personal satisfaction and having balance to life.  Making money is fun but is not the answer to a satisfying life.

Money is not always a motivator either. The longer you have been in business world, chances are you are less affected by the almighty dollar. The things that matter most are doing business the right way, maintaining a sense of quality and integrity. Setting your sights on these things becomes more and more important the older you get and you can't put a price tag on them.

Having goals is important but having written goals that you can visualize is even more essential. A well rounded life with friends, family, philanthropy and faith are the salt and pepper of life and have to be factored into the plan. Picturing ourselves being happy is a legitimate and worthy goal. Don't just make your goals about dollars and sales quotas. Without the right balance, life is bland lacking the spice that brings out the flavor in living and working. It's not all about how much you can earn, it's about balance.

Hi Debbie - a work life balance is necessary because what is all of the money worth if you can't enjoy it and to Barbara Todaro 's point you can achieve both by working smart.

Debbie, I really enjoyed reading your post this morning. I have found that if I just focus on serving my clients and going above and beyond, the money falls into place. I tweak systems and fine tune my process continually but, focusing on the almighty dollar isn't something I can say I do anymore.

Hi Debbie,

My husband an I work together as a team and understand the sacrifices that need to be made to take care of the customer.  We do what we can to get time for ourselves.  We retired young and had lots of time to reflect and enjoy life.  Now our love of real estate provides the balance we lacked.  But you are right - there needs to be balance and balance is in the eye of the beholder.

Agreed!  Balance is key and something I'm trying to work on.  Got a bit unbalanced recently (heavy on the work side), need to fix that.

Debbie I will not down play the importance of money, but it is a mistake for anyone to equate it with happiness.

The love of money may be the root of all evil if that is all that matters. Exercise, freedom from stress, passion for what you do, and a reward system makes life worth living.

This is a great post, and so right on. I'm working hard to find my balance. It's not quite there, yet, but eventually I will get there.

I used to make financial goals.  I don't anymore.  I work most every day until I decide to quit for the day.  I try to be home every evening to spend time with my husband.  Life is too short.  Some days,my kids come to the office and I accomplish very little.  I always take care of my clients, but I am the one that really has an interest in my family.  It works for me.

Debbie Reynolds Great post, but unfortunately, in our fiscally-focuses world, success is gauged by how much money a person has not earned, but accumulated. That is the adult scorecard.
