DON'T GIVE UP ON THAT KITCHEN JUST YET...

I always tell my clients that we are STAGING their home to sell, not DECORATING their home to live. So what is my purpose as a home stager? It is my job to present that home in it's best light. We want to show a buyer how they can live with that dated kitchen or bath for a year until they can afford to replace it with the kitchen or bath of their dreams. That's the buyers job, not the stager's or sellers job. WHY?? Because everyone's taste are different.

So for a dated kitchen, try painting the cabinets. Be sure you have the proper tools and correct paint. I use an oil based sealing primer by Benjamin Moore and then topcoat with a latex paint. In this kitchen we used Almond and put on new brushed nickel knobs. We did not change the countertops. The transformation is pretty amazing...

BEFORE the kitchen appears dated, dark and tired.

Now it appears to be a brand new  space filled with light. The cost for this room was approximately $500.00.

Phyllis,

Looks great. It's amazing what a little paint will do! Did you sand down the cabinet fronts before you painted?

Phyllis: I did the same to a kitchen and for about the same money...the change was worth a million.

Hey Phyllis - I have been in several homes with this 80's style cabinets.  People seriously don't like it. I've never painted cabinets but it is really worth the effort.  These look fantastic.

Q:  Did you paint the Formica fronts or just the wood trim?

Q2:  Did you remove all the doors to paint them?

Q3:  How hard was it to add hardware to the Formica cabinet fronts?

This is such a wow transformation!

Hey Maureen

1. Not at first but we did not like how it looked so we decided to paint them and we all agree it was the better choice.

2. Yep all doors should always be removed and NUMBERED when painting cabinets

3. Nope not for me one of my guys did it, ha, ha...seriously tho with the right tools it was easy to drill thru the doors.

Another neat look for these types of cabinets for a contemporary home would be to paint the doors only black

Those cabinets look so much better now -- a great update for very little $$$.

Phyllis, Super. I love paint...paint is the greatest most inexpensive tool available to us stagers. Great colour and the picture of the flowers is wonderful.

Awesome job!  It makes so much more sense to give the buyers that move-in ready atmosphere even when future updates will be needed.  Most of the competition in their price range won't be making those improvements, so they will have the advantage.

We just bought a home with similar cabinets.  I'm glad I saw your transformation because we've been wondering how we can update on a budget.

Do you have more photos? Got any great closeups? I'd love to see how it looks close up.

thanks.

I like that you included the cost to stage the room with your before & after's; nice work.

These cabinets look updated now, Phyllis. Makes the countertops look better,  too.
