Holidays Teach Us About Expectations

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Realty 0575737

Holidays CoffeeNowhere in the series of holidays during the year do you see the FRENZY that comes about with Christmas and New Year's. The purchase of gifts alone could be almost be looked at as "forced buying" pushed by all the merchants. I used to feel with decorating and traveling and spending money when I at least hit December 26th, the real peace on earth and sanity restored was that point in time.

I had always heard that if you have NO EXPECTATIONS you will have no disappointment. Expectations at the holidays time for family or the way things should be no question can stress us out to the point of wanting to pull your hair out. The expectations thinking is really a learning tool to practice going with the flow, letting go, not being so hard on yourself and others.

I really think to have the most enjoyable time with some down time is to have SOME expectations but not so high you just feel awful when things go a different way. Temper your expectaions and focus on PEOPLE and good memories, not an outcome.

I guess I am one of the odd ones without really having expectations. Whatever happens just happens.

While this is suppose to be the "happyest or bestest" time of year it puts a lot of added expectations and pressures. I can see this year there is more stress for some to perform.... all the best

Gary,

Sound advice.  It is all about spending time with family and friends.  Unfortunately, many these days are in the "gimme" mode with high expectations.  It is a time for giving from the heart.  That is what happened at the first Christmas.

Gary: It's all the media hype that starts way before Thanksgiving for us to go out there and BUY. So many people get way over their head financially with it. I keep focusing on what is really important, and that is my family and close friends.

Good post!  It is all about the memories for me.  Sharing time with family and friends without all of the hoopla related to the commercialized Christmas season.

And in my home we never forget the reason for the season!

Our family has been focusing on the little things around Christmas time for quite a few years now. Baking cookies, driving around looking at Christmas lights, and watching Christmas movies at home are all how we like to enjoy this time of year.

I would wish, on my side atleast, that I had no expectation at all.  Just show up, and make it the best.

Our society has grossly over-commercialized Christmas. Experiences, not things, are what's really important. Merry Christmas!

Gary,  I expect to have a peaceful and joyful Christmas.  Christmas is not about me or what others want of me ... it's about honoring and celebrating the spirit of Christmas.

Merry Christmas!!!

Hi Gary,

Well I'm concerned that I won't have time to log on again before Christmas, so I want to take the opportunity to wish you a Merry Christmas now.  :)

As  usual, you have made a great point.

We're not about STUFF. Simplicity has been the theme this year and creating homemade gifts filled with love is what I've been doing lately. I used to do that when I had no money, now it's a with a different mindset. I think we could all use less stress no matter how you choose to release it.

Happy HOlidays, Gary. Congrats on the feature.

Hi, Gary. I don't expect a lot, but I give a lot in so many ways. It's not about gifts. I'm not talking about that kind of giving. I try to get any shopping I need to do done early to avoid the FRENZY. I spent the holiday home with someone very special and a few friends and it was quiet and beautiful.
