What's With These Wires?

wires

While the scene to right is a very common scene it may be new and alarming to folks looking for their first home.

What are all those wires? Why are they outside the electrical box? Why are they not connected to anything.

All questions I hear often when showing homes to first time home owners.

The answer:

The black wires are coax cable, used for either television or internet.

The blue wires are for internet connections.

These wires came from outlets in different rooms of the house and end here.

The reason they are not hooked up to anything is because you, the home owner need to choose both your television provider and your internet provider. Those providers will supply equipment that will determine what wires will be used along with your choices of what rooms you want "wired".

In some cases your television signal and internet providers will hook the wires up to their equipment for you, in other cases you may do it yourself or hire an electrician to do the job.

The picture above is in my own home. I have a television antena on the roof of my home and I hooked all the television (coax) cables to a powered hub to insure a strong signal in every room of my home. I have 3 desktop computers hooked up to wire and the rest are all wifi.

None of the coax (black) or internet (blue) wires carry voltage so do not be afraid of these wires, this is a reason they are NOT in the breaker (fuse) box.

I've walked in to a few homes with those wire bundles. Mostly when homes have a media or theater room they'll have that huge cluster of wires.

Nicole Doty - Gilbert Real Estate Expert When we rebuilt our home in 2011 I wanted to make sure every room was wired for what ever may come, little did I know everything would pretty much go wireless but I'm betting something will come down the line that those wire can be used for in the future.

It is nice now that homes are wired although many don't quite understand the reason for the wires.  Eventually everything will be wireless except for the one router.

I think you are spot on Gary L. Waters, Broker Owner, Waters Realty of Brevard, LLC with the exception of dinosaurs like myself that still have an antenna on the top of the house.

Sometimes the wires aren't that neat and seeing them all intertwined and bundled together can be unnerving to people.

That's for sure Sharon Tara . Mine were the bundled mess that you speak off and I straightened them out. Also very few (only the best) electricians will label these wires so it's a nightmare when you want to activate one room and you have no idea which of the 20 or more wires go to that room.

That is a bit of a mess.  At least they fastened them to the side of the wall.

Good afternoon Bob,

And then there is the problem of everytime a new owner upgrades the old wires tend to stay behind and become worse and worse!

Make yourself a great day.

That's especially true Raymond E. Camp when the electrician only leaves a stub of a wire to begin with so putting a new end on it is impossible.

I had a house with a similar situation.  Trimmed most the cables and looped them up and out of the way.  Cable company will run their own when they do the install, so not worried.

You may have a better cable company than us. Ours just drills holes through the exterior walls and staples the cable all over the exterior of the house Ryan Huggins - Thousand Oaks, CA

On new construction we see this bundle on the outside and the buyers ask what is going on. Your explanation is right on and will keep a buyer from being concerned.
