For those who love nature, owning a home in the mountains seems like a dream come true.
It is fun to be able to have a home base that gives easy access to hiking, fishing, biking,
snowmobiling , etc. Or maybe you just like hearing nature’s sounds instead of city noises.
Ahhh, the thought of having your morning coffee on the front porch listening to the birds singing!!!
Whether you are considering purchasing mountain property for weekend getaways or for your
primary residence, there are a couple of things to consider.
Living in the mountains means limited highway access. You should understand that you will
need to leave much earlier to get to a main road. Think about taking a trial run during rush hours
so you have a better idea on the time needed to get to work, etc. You will have longer travel time
to get to the doctor, groceries, and gas. It would be a good idea to organize your errands so that
forgetting something like bread, etc won’t become a huge inconvenience.
Stocking up your pantry with nonperishables and your emergency kits with batteries is wise idea,
since snow and rain storms cause roads to become dangerous. There is a great possibility you will
be stuck at home for a few days!
There can be frequent power outages on the mountains. Keeping a stock of candles, lighters,
flashlights and batteries is not just a suggestion. It is a necessity! Having a back up generator and
propane for cooking is also a good idea. If the power goes out, your home phone will most likely be
out as well. A CB radio gives you an extra communication backup.
Don’t be discouraged after reading some of the issues above. There are pros and cons living
anywhere. If you are moving from the city to the mountains, you just have to remember it is
different. Research the mountain area you want to buy, and be prepared to make certain
adjustments for mountain living.
