How do You Remember Names?

By
Real Estate Agent with Metro Brokers/Priority Properties, Inc. ABR, CNE, CRS, GRI, e-PRO

Do you have a strategy for remembering names?  Sometimes I can kick myself for not coming out with a name I should not have to think about to say.  Have you ever not introduced your spouse/friends/clients to someone because you can't remember their name?

HELP- Tell me your method for remembering names.  Thanks, whatever your name is!

I am not so good at this either.  It is embarassing.  I have Craig trained though.  Now he just hold out his hand and says Hi I'm Craig and they usually respond with I am Joe Blow.  With clients, I write the names down of their family and their pets when I first meet them.

Belinda Spillman I even do that and get embarassed when they say "we've already met" instead of their name.  OOOOHH...Busted!

Hello Cheri Long,  I know we all have problems sometimes with names but the younger we get the better we remember.  wait, did I say that.

Cheri, this is one of my shortcomings as well.  The gurus say the best way is to repeat the name when you first are introduced and also repeat it to yourself a number of times.  (Though I tend to forget to do this as well.)

Thanks Gabe Sanders I try that, struggle with it since I really need to see it in writing for it to stick.  Maybe I should draw it on my hand...

It tends to depend on the name for me.  Common names are almost impossible, with the exception of Jennifer.  I know a ton of them!  Odd or ethnic names are easier for me and last names are the easiest.  I'll often call someone by their last name because I can't remember their first name (and that's usually something easy like "John").

LOL, that's a great strategy.  I could just always refer to them as Mr or Mrs or Ma'm or Sir.  I love your last name advice Ryan Huggins - Thousand Oaks, CA

Well, living in Los Angeles, it is ok to use ''my dear'', ''gorgeus'' or something like that:) It helps a lot.

Oh I wish.  My daughter fell in love with a "southern boy" who had her at Darrrrlin'.  Wish that would work for me!  Thanks Inna Ivchenko

Hi Cheri- I also use what Belinda Spillman uses but it doesn't always work. I write down their name in a notepad I have on my phone, with a hint about them.

I think writing a name triggers a better recall percentage. Thanks for that.
