One comment (among the MANY great ones) comes from Rob Arnold and may be brief but it is a very important reminder:


"(1) if by owner, look up the tax records and then verify their identity with a photo ID
(2) if by agent, make them provide a copy of their real estate license so you can verify online and a photo ID."  


Common sense? Yes, and important for everyone's personal SAFETY also. Great reminder Scott Godzyk !

Who wouldn't want to rent to own a newer luxury home at more than half off market rents. What a great deal or is it? When the police call to say 3 families are at one of my vacant bank owned listings ready to move in, can i get over there to clear things up. I smelled something wrong. All i had to hear is "we saw an ad on Craigslist for a rent to own home at half price to any family willing to care for the home."

 

How can people not know about this rental scam that as been around for way over 5 years? Who would rent a home without seeing the inside? and... who would wire money overseas without seeing said home or without signing a lease?

 

 

THE TOP 10 WAYS TO SPOT A SCAM

1. They are asking you to rent a home without letting you see inside.

2. They ask you to wire money.

3. The rental price is less than market rates

4. The say they are out of the country

5. They say they are missionaries

6. They say they are doing you a favor cutting the rent so you care of the home Iike they would

7. You notice the home is for sale as well

8. You found it online by owner and not through a listing agent

9. Take the time to look up the tax card, see who the owner is. Meet in person. Ask for ID.

10. When it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

Good morning, Lynn... we were seeing these scams a lot for while a few years ago in Charlotte. Not so much now, but I do know they still pop up here on Craig's List. I used get calls from people asking if the "offer was real." And on occasion had people call who had been suckered with the ad.

Lynn, we constantly hear of scamming, and is a good idea to do some research on the owner before giving up a large deposit.

I manage a decent sized brokerage in Florida and a couple years ago, this scam seemed to happen about every other month with one of our listings or rentals.  Now as people have caught on, it seems to have slowed down to about 3 or 4 times per year.  Still a major rip off for the poorest of people.
