 Aloha Kakou,

Greetings everyone and welcome to downtown Honolulu.

This beautiful building is located on the Fort Street Mall in Honolulu's financial district. It was commissioned by C.Brewer & Co. Designed  by the New York architect ,Hardie Phillips, in 1930 its Classic Style: Hawaiian Regional.

Design elements:

The balcony above the entry make use of Hawaiian kapa motifs(geometric designs used by the ancients in cloth, printing, and woodcarving).

Also incorporated are Asian influences: Window frame treatments and the dark stained Teak front door with wrought iron hinges and hardware.

The Art Deco copper lighting fixtures add a touch of modern sophistication, while the textured use of rough hewn blocks with plaster add solidity to the buildings exterior.

The Ceramic tile roof & The Spur motif Iron work gates and fencing takes excellent advantage of the Trade winds and on shore brezzes.

One of many Honolulu buildings of historical significance and high design. In my next bog I'll give you a peak at some more of historic Honolulu.

Wonderful melding of so many influences...I wonder if Hardie Phillips was ever actually in Hawaii before he did this design...something movie-set about it.  Fabulous - thanks for sharing!  Julie

Kehaulani, my sister lived in Oahu and near Honolulu for a number of years and your photos bring back good memories. What a warm and friendly place. Keep the photos coming.

Aloha Kehaulani,

Thank you for sharing a great blog about this beautiful building.  I love to see different architechture from around the country. The architectural style on this building is definitely something that will not date easily and will stand strong throughout time.  I love the combination of the stone walls and the teak and wrought iron.  Do you know, if the stone is limestone? It's just beautiful and it sounds like you are very proud of this building in your community and rightfully so.
