Mother nature tends to teach us many lessons along the way. Living in a 4 season climate those winter snow lessons come quick. I was out plowing snow this morning and when I reached the bottom of my drive I found a car conviently side ways blocking the road and a very upset driver in tears. It was one of my neighbors coming to wish us a happy holiday season and totally un prepared to navigate my snowy driveway. We got them unstuck and they happily went home, but it did give me an idea for todays blog post.
The very first tip when you get stuck in the snow and ice is to not panic. Take a deep breath and stay calm. Remember spinning your tires is not the answer, you will only make matters worse and bury yourself deeper.
Here are a couple handy little tricks to give you traction when stuck in the snow and ice.
Cat Litter for Snow and Ice
Keep a bag or jug of cat litter in your trunk during the winter. If your tires spin out and you can’t shovel your way out grab the bag of cat litter. Spreading it in front of all 4 tires and a little behind will provide you enough traction for your tires so you can get out of your tough situation.
Use those left over shingles
The real estate agent in me always thinks of good uses for those left over home building supplies. Store a few roof shingles in your car. If your car is stuck in snow or ice, just put a shingle under the drive wheels and they will give you enough traction to get unstuck.
Totally unprepared? Use the old Floor Mat Trick.
If your car is stuck in snow or ice, take out your floor mats, turn them upside down and place them under and in front of the drive wheels. You’ll be out in no time. Then all you have to do is pick up your floor mats and drive away.
Hope these little tips help you if you ever get stuck in the snow. Happy and Safe winter driving!
