How To Get Rid Of Moving Boxes

If you've moved recently, if you shop online or have frequent deliveries, you probably have a good supply of sturdy boxes. Rather than throw them away, why not consider a green approach? Cardboard Boxes

  • Recycle those boxes. Most municipalities have recycling programs. Rankin County has two drop off locations, one at the multi-purpose complex on Marquette Road, and a second location at the Reservoir Community Center on Spillway Road. Break the boxes  down so they lay flat.
  • Carry them to a nearby donation center.  Employees can use the boxes in the warehouse, and customers frequently need boxes to carry their purchases home.
  • Fill the boxes with donations.  Instead of donating EMPTY boxes, fill them up first. The donation center will gladly accept your items in good used condition, and you have the added bonus of cleaning out your clutter.
  • My favorite way to dispose of empty boxes is to give them to someone who is moving. Boxes are in high demand when families are moving, and most buyers and sellers will cheerfully take those excess boxes. I pass them on to clients frequently.

Disposing of boxes properly can deter break-ins.

Would-be thieves are always on the lookout for homes with new electronics or other major purchases, especially at holiday time, so boxes placed with the trash is a tell-tale sign. Protect your home and be kind to the environment at the same time.

Can you think of other ways to reuse boxes? If so, please share your thoughts in the comment section.

Thanks for the suggestions of how to get rid of moving boxes. I once offered free moving boxes on Craig's List. One woman asked me to break down the boxes because she wante dto fit them in her car.  They were full of packing paper and I  told her I couldn't do that. It didn't tkae long to find someone who had a truck to take them.

Sybil Campbell - I rarely use Craigslist, but many people use Facebook groups to pass moving boxes along. Like you, I don't want to break them down...too much trouble and SUVs can hold a LOT of boxes.

John Pusa - I'm environmentally conscious so I'll always to my part to reuse and recycle whenever possible.

Good morning Pat. Nice post. I like filling them but my donations, while ongoing, are generally made before the move.

Good ideas, Pat!  I agree that putting boxes to the curb, that contained your new electronics or appliances can be a risk!

I've recycled, filled with donations AND given them to folks who need them to pack because of a move. Boxes don't spend much time hanging around at my house!
