If you've moved recently, if you shop online or have frequent deliveries, you probably have a good supply of sturdy boxes. Rather than throw them away, why not consider a green approach?
- Recycle those boxes. Most municipalities have recycling programs. Rankin County has two drop off locations, one at the multi-purpose complex on Marquette Road, and a second location at the Reservoir Community Center on Spillway Road. Break the boxes down so they lay flat.
- Carry them to a nearby donation center. Employees can use the boxes in the warehouse, and customers frequently need boxes to carry their purchases home.
- Fill the boxes with donations. Instead of donating EMPTY boxes, fill them up first. The donation center will gladly accept your items in good used condition, and you have the added bonus of cleaning out your clutter.
- My favorite way to dispose of empty boxes is to give them to someone who is moving. Boxes are in high demand when families are moving, and most buyers and sellers will cheerfully take those excess boxes. I pass them on to clients frequently.
Disposing of boxes properly can deter break-ins.
Would-be thieves are always on the lookout for homes with new electronics or other major purchases, especially at holiday time, so boxes placed with the trash is a tell-tale sign. Protect your home and be kind to the environment at the same time.
Can you think of other ways to reuse boxes? If so, please share your thoughts in the comment section.
Do the environment a favor.
Reduce, reuse, or recycle whenever possible.
