5 Smart Ways To Pet-Proof Your Home

Pets are wonderful additions to any family. Whether it's a dog or cat, our furry little (or not so little) friends provide companionship, relaxation, furry snuggles and unconditional love. However, we have to admit that they also bring some messy issues like the tendency to break things, truckloads of hair, and discarded toys in the middle of the living room.

So we've listed these pet-proofing ideas for all homeowners who love their home and their furry friends at the same time.

  • Create a separate eating area. You can turn a room or an unused space in your house into a kitchen that caters specifically to your dog or cat. Add old kitchen appliances and furniture to accessorize the space like tables and chairs and old microwave oven (for heating their food).
  • Say no to carpet. Choose floor materials that don't scratch easily and are easy to use. Good flooring materials when you have pets include bamboo and tiles.
  • Decorate your windows wisely. Make sure curtains do not drag to the floor and they are out of your pet's reach. Your window coverings should be thick enough to withstand the test of claws. Make sure that cords are also out of reach to avoid accidents.
  • Keep breakables and important things out of reach. You can put a barrier to avoid your pets from getting close to your beloved vase or important memento. Animals love exploring with their noses and mouths, so it's common for indoor and outdoor items to be sniffed, licked, or chewed upon.
  • Keep pet toys out of sight. Nothing ruins your decor more than finding a gnawed-on ham bone on your sofa. Stash pet toys in a basket and keep it to the side. You can also create their own personal space where you can stash their "properties". Place a cozy crate or dog bed in a kitchen nook, under a table, or in a corner that your pets can call their own.
