Wellington Florida Hurricane Preparedness Workshop Will Be Held This Sunday April 27th

Yes, it is that time of the year again! Hurricane season is upon us and it is time to take inventory and check your supplies. Make your list and get your shopping done early. We all know what it is like to go to the store to find all the shelves bare right before the storm arrives.

We were very fortunate and blessed last year to not have any threats or hurricanes here in Wellington Florida. We do not get that many. We are 14 miles away from the shoreline and pretty well protected. But then Wilma did her fancy turn around and decided to get us not once but twice in October 2005. This is a reminder that we must be prepared. We were without power for 21 days after Wilma hit us. We are thankful we had our generator, our barbeque with propane to heat up water to take baths and to cook on. We also did not have phones or internet connections working during that time.

Hurricane preparedness

Hurricanes are the one natural disaster that gives plenty of warning. In fact we get days ahead of warnings! There is not excuse to not be prepared. When there is an earthquake or a tornado there is very little to no warning. So we need to consider ourselves very blessed in this regard and take this seriously.

This Sunday night at the Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints in Wellington Florida there is a great meeting to discuss and give ideas on Hurricane Preparedness.

Topic to be discussed include:

  • An overview on timing of a Hurricane.
  • Food preparation
  • Generator Setup, generator safety and fuel storage
  • Insurance coverage
  • Roof Repair
  • First Aid Preparedness
  • Safe Rooms
  • Escape Routes
  • Pets
  • Disaster survival kits

The workshop will begin at 7 p.m. and last till 8:30 p.m.

If you have any questions you can call me at 561-753-0135. You do not have to RSVP for the event, just come and learn and get ready for the season.

The church is located at the corner of Big Blue Trace and Wellington Trace. You can not miss it, the church is right on the corner.

Let's all hope and pray that we will see Florida spared as well as the Gulf Coast from hurricanes this year.

Hi Nestor and Katerina, I think it's great that you'll have the Hurricane workshop.  It is so critical to know what to do. Remember when Houston had to evacuate?  It was a nightmare and didn't work too well.  Texas needs to improve their awareness and education.

Katerina, it's certainly a great idea to have a Hurricane Preparedness Workshop.  I just pray that there are no serious storms that strike the U.S. this year -- that's the last thing we need among all the other storms brewing in the economy, the housing market, etc.

I have always been amazed at the "last minute rush" to the grocery store of supplies when folks have watched the hurricane coming for days, often weeks.  Sure, it could veer, but that last minute rush thing has always been an inigma to me.

Kay- I remember when that happened in Houston. Nestor lived in Houston for 18 years so we keep our eye on Houston as he still have friends there.

Brian- That is the last thing we need, especially in this housing market. When Hurricanes strike real estate shuts down! Don't need that this year!

Lenn- What drove me crazy after Wilma is the lines for people to get water! I mean, it does not take a rocket scientist to figure out weeks before a storm comes your way to start filling up your water jugs and if you don't have money to buy water to save your jars and beverage bottles and fill them up with water! All these people standing around in lines complaining that the government was not fast enough to take care of them! Have they ever heard of self reliance?

Katerina, That is the one single thing that scares me about moving to Florida....I guess I believe it would be perfect without the threat of hurricanes.  It's wonderful to be prepared and have plans on what you would do.

Carole- You don't need to be scared. You can always get a hurricane up in Long Island too! You can leave if you are scared. But you get so much warning and it is really not that bad. I will take a hurricane over a tornado or a flood any day!

Katerina, isn't it wonderful to have such a great resource? The church is always telling us to "be prepared." Even showing us how with workshops like this one. Great news!!! Hopefully a lot of people will be there. One thing I do want to get into my storage is a generator. I have all of the other stuff............I think. ;-)

I am just soooo glad I've moved away from the earthquakes (I hope they don't come here) and that we're not in Tornado alley, and that we don't have to deal with hurricanes. For lack thereof, I'll deal with the heat - by retreating to the mountains. ;-)

Scott- And the west coast is actually not immune to hurricanes. They are possible. But more of a threat to the western seaboard is a Tsunami. That has not happened but it did in Alaska. And yes, you have earthquakes! I lived through some earthquakes.

Great post! This is something everyone needs to take seriously. The great thing about a hurricane is that you have plenty of advance warning and can GET OUT OF HARM'S WAY!!!! I would rather live in a state that has hurricanes than one with earthquakes anyday.....but that is just me! I love the idea of advance warning!
