YES, Smoking does KILL - I have a Non-Smoker's Home for YOU!

By
Real Estate Agent with Sotheby's International Realty Canada - Brokerage

Yesterday I read a fascinating article on the danger of buying a home from a smoker:

Buying-a-house-from-a-smoker-could-prove-dangerous-for-your-health

In this study, it was found that "Buying a home from a smoker could increase the risk of cancer as third-hand smoke is almost impossible to remove from carpets, curtains and walls".

They said third-hand smoke residue could be absorbed into almost any porous surface, which then leaks out over time.

Homes become reservoirs of tobacco smoke pollutants. These volatile compounds soak into the drywall. Gypsum is like a bottomless pit for these toxins. Carpets are tremendous reservoirs."

This home on 1154 Deer Park Lane just North of Kingston, On has NEVER been smoked in since it was built 20 years ago!!   It is well worth a visit so take a look at your schedule and give Susan Emo a call to set up your own personal viewing!

Asking $747,000 Canadian which at today's exchange rate is only $539,215 in US Dollars

Susan,

This a beautiful home, and congrats on the listing.   I love homes when no one has ever smoked.  We seem to have been fortunate, and have not lived anywhere where there has been a smoker.  Wishing you a speedy and easy transaction.  A

What a great thing to be able to advertise. So many people did not take the smoking warnings seriously back then. Glad your seller did, it is now paying off. Congratulations on this listing.

That makes a lot of sense and I really hate when I walk into a house and can immediately tell that it has been smoked in, not a great first impression at all.

Brian England I've had smokers walk into a home and they hate that someone else has been smoking in it. LOL

I always suggest to my buers when a home has theodor of some to have someone come in and professionally deoderize and sanitize the home.  Somers . . .when are they going to grow up?  Smoking is also a number cause for gum disease and mouth cancers.

I am constantly shocked to discover people who smoke!  I can understand this happening decades ago but with all the information at our fingertips, and all the many many ways of quitting available, I'll never understand it!

Hi Susan Emo , I left this post on Kathy Streib reblog. I came from So Cal and we got used to non-smoking everywhere. When I came to Arizona, they still had smoking areas in restaurants! I had to show a customer a home from a smoker and the value was 10% lower than another similar home in the area.  It had been on market 13 months.  It took another 5 months to sell and another price reduction.  You make a great point.

We've been smoke-free for quite some time up here but I still remember those days!  These new studies are proving that smoke permeates everything and is toxic - when will people learn??  Thanks for stopping by Sheri Sperry

Thanks for stopping by Noah Seidenberg   I get so frustrated with people who think it is simply an odour problem!   It is a health hazard worse than mold and as bad as asbestos

I currently have a listing and there were 3 smokers in the house for 4 years.  It does get horrible feedback when shown and will not be easy to sell, but the smell will come out when cleaned properly

The smell may come out but the deadly toxins will remain in the walls Ed Silva !  I hope the new owner doesn't have children playing on the floors!

Hi Susan - in California we have a seller disclosure which asks if any occupant of the property is a smoker.

Good luck with your new listing --- let us know how this marketing angle works.

I think we're going to see that Seller disclosure everywhere soon!  Stay tuned Michael Jacobs

Thanks Susan, for sharing that information about third hand smoking, I had no idea how harmful that can be. Congratulations on your new listing, it's a beautiful house.

Thanks Jorge Martinez   So many people falsely believe it is only an unpleasant aroma instead of deadly toxins!

Cigarette smoke is one of the most offensive odors out there and can really hurt a home's value.  Not sure any buyer that isn't already a smoker would want to keep all the carpet and leave the paint when buying a home where a smoker lived.  Makes me wonder how legit the study is that third hand smoke can kill.  Somehow, I'm thinking third hand smoke is ingested by those ingesting first hand smoke anyway.

Jan 04, 2016 03:58 AM
Susan Emo

Chris Ann Cleland  what the study is showing is that the drywall holds onto the toxic chemicals and repainting doesn't seal it in.

I agree in that the soft furnishings and carpet would most likely be removed but now they've proven that it does get absorbed into the walls.

It's just gross to think about.  Smoke free homes are the best.

LOL Gayle Rich-Boxman Fishhawk Lake Realtor (503)755-2905   If I was to name this home I would name it "Sparkle Plenty" !!    We have many people who will not purchase a home that has had asbestos in it and I'm now finding people who are equally aware of the danger of Third Hand Smoke in the walls.  Curtains and carpet and furniture will be removed but the walls remain and they are a danger in Smoker's homes!

Many years ago my inlaws sold their home and I couldn't believe they found a buyer. The home had been smoked in by three people for over 20 years. It was nasty. If you removed a picture from the wall you could see how much the wallpaper had been stained over the years.  Even though there was "no smoking" when we visited with our three small children, I would still have to put them all in the tub when we got home and I would shower and wash my hair.

Knowing there has been no smoke in it makes it even look cleaner! The oak cabinets and flooring give it warmth! Some lucky buyer will be the next owner of this home! I hope it is soon!
