Google your name, make a movie on what you find

Not just your first name... your whole name. Of course you do it to see yourself on the www. Narcissism? Do you do it to meet people? Is there a point to meeting people with your name? There was for Jim Killeen.

This Friday there is a movie coming out on YouTube, by Jim Killeen who found other Jim Killeens around the world, visited them and videoed the Jim Killeens...

"Along the way, Killeen tracked down six fellow Jim Killeens: a priest from Cobh, Ireland; a traffic engineer from Edinburgh, Scotland; a CEO from Melbourne, Australia; a "sexual swinger" from Denver; a retired police detective from New York City; and a father of eight from St. Louis." Above is the link to the story on CNET.com

How common is YOUR name? Have you ever met anyone with your name?

Me? My name is very common. There is a Realtor in Florida with the same name. An artist in Massachusetts is named Maureen McCabe... I did not know about them until the www. I found the Realtor in Florida a few years back via the MSN search because an agent in my office was upset about her son searching for her name (with MSN) and another agent (with another name) in our office popped up first. She was concerned the other agent was doing something. I was already blogging at the time so a lot of the "Maureen McCabe" I found was me. I own the MaureenMcCabe.com domain... because I am a real estate agent and that's what THEY told us to do way back when.

Jim Killeen's Google Me the movie

Using Killeen's site most of the Maureen McCabes that come up are me (same as if I search Google normally as we all did at some point to see what others see when they Google our names.) I am kind of a Google hog due to blogging. I've broken the links so I am not link spamming myself here:

Location Location Location

I have never met another Maureen McCabe but hey I could go traveling, make a video... Nah It's been done by Jim Killeen and the movie comes out Friday.

For an extra twist Jim Killeen got many of the Jim Killeens to meet up in Killeen Texas for part of his video. I doubt there is a place called McCabe, well maybe a bar someplace...

When I lived and sold RE in NY I had no web presence. There was a wedding planner/photographer and I was getting his phone calls on occaision for some reason. There is also some guy who is a gun expert. I cover most of the first 3 pages.

3 months ago when I Googled "Mark A Moore", www.markamoore.com was nowhere to be found.  Then I joined AR and that changed.

There is a hip DJ in the UK that shares my name.

I'm every where.  I like to tell everyone that my real name is Suzy Smith and Cindy Jones is just my stage name.  It usually gets few puzzled looks and a smile.

My Mom always told me I was one of a kind.  No others with the same spelling of my name, although there is a website for all those with the first name Lorrie.

Hi Maureen! Great post.  I'm just imagining what would happen if I attempted something like that with "Dan Johnson".  Sure I'd see me, but I'd see many of the other hundreds or thousands of us.  Sharing my name with my dad, too.

That's one of the reasons I've tried to brand myself online with my full name.  Other than a Quebec politician, most of the results are from me, when I Google "Daniel Johnson, Jr."

Make it a great day!

Daniel Johnson, Jr.

thanks all for the comments.

Shannon...cool. There is someone with my name in movies too?  Maybe she is a screen writer?  I am often amazed by what a Google hog I can be with the name because I would think the artist and the writer (?) would have more interest in the name bringing people back to them, their work than I would.

Real estate agents are obviously very self promotional.  I don't give a rats behind about my name being prominent on Google, I just want it to pop up for geographic keywords and house, home, real estate.

Brian I am probably the "doppelganger stalker" to the Maureen McCabe in Florida....

The Brian Block doppelganger "stalker"  wrote:

"Do you know that among the Brian Blocks that come up on a Google search there are: a radiologist, an anesthesiologist, a boat racer, an adventure outfitter salesman, a chief accounting officer for a large brokerage house, a Bally's Sales Manager, a fire chief, a mortuary tech, a BMX racer, a bass fishing champion, a poet, a writer, a painter, a photographer, a model train builder, an auctioneer, a financial analyst, a systems administrator, and the list continues!"

Jim Killeen found other people with the same name interesting and made a movie into it.  There probably are not commercial prospects for all of us but Brian got an AR post out of it.... anyway.  and so did I.

Lorrie I have a site for Maureens.  The Maureen Corps.  Only 4 of us.

Daniel Johnson... there do have to be a lot of you but you are one of a kind.   Same for Cindy Jones, Mark Moore etc. you are one of a kind and the important thing on Google (etc.)  for the r.e. industry is that  when someone Googles your location, your name is linked to the neighborhood, city, county... whatever you are focusing on via the web.

but where are you on Google for Virginia Beach Real Estate?  Being on "a first name basis" with a search engine  doesn't mean much.  You want it to spit out your name when someone is searching for real estate in your market.   That's the point of ActiveRain.com / Localism's Google juice....

Brendan McCabe in Singapore? Brendan McCabe photographer?  I don't believe I have never seen a  Google page like the Google page warning  people against opening a Brendan McCabe's photography site.

I did not see anyone old and dead in Northern Ireland (maybe because I was so intrigued with the Google warning page.  I do see the Brendan McCabe who died on September 11.

There are all sorts of Steve and combinations of Steve. I actually think I am probably the most boring of them all, which is ironic as I have a bigger web presence than the rest.  There's an author, a photographer, a sports announcer, a Dr., a school principal, and that's just a few.  Like Cindy, people are always telling me, man - you are all over the web.

Maureen when I am interviewing with a perspective home seller one the things I will ask them to do is Google all the agents names they are interviewing. I tell them there should be pages and pages of results. If not I ask them how they could possibly do a good job marketing your home online if they don't even know how to market themselves - very powerful stuff - really makes them think!

Wow... If you read the CNET story about Jim Killeen (no sign from the comments that anyone really has...) you can see that he wondered if Google would ask him to not name the movie "Google Me The Movie" because they do protect their  trademark....  I just noticed a new comment on an AR blog about Googling Yourself (which saiid search not Google), look at the signature.

Blog Comment by Andy "Google Me" Greider: On "Protecting Your Good Name ~ updated to correct link"

Jim Killeen said Google is not fond of "Google" being used as a verb... I think is used as a verb... when you say "Google Me"

Maureen - My name is also not that uncommon.  I once spoke with another Jason Crouch who is a real estate broker in California.  The other day, when I was buying a couple of computers at Fry's Electronics, the salesperson said he knew a Jason Crouch who was a football coach.  I would like to meet another one in person sometime.

If you have a common name, Use Quotations around your name and even a middle initial. It helps to narrow the search.

Jim you are one of a kind aren't you?

Narrowing the search is only a good idea if you want to know about yourself... and I won't count on people to use my middle initial when they are talking about me....

You don't want to narrow the search when you are looking for others with your same name....

Maureen ~ Great post. My name is not all that common. About 12 years ago it became apparent that there were two Heather Rankin musicians and I was only one of them. The other Heather is part of the famous "Rankin Family Band" from Canada. Imagine the surprise and confusion for people who found me as a musician on the internet "the not famous Heather Rankin" and thought I was her. Over the years I bet I've had 40 people contact me, thinking I was her. Usually ends up with a funny email or phone conversation over the whole deal.

Thanks for the comments. Darn one looks like he did not bother to read the post or the AR guidelines... the @ActiveRich email has gone out....  made for discussions about spelling on Twitter this morning...

50% of comments being about what the post is about (others with the same name) and not from a self absorbed RE agent is pretty good.

Heather I don't know the Rankin Family Band from Canada but I will probably stumble over them now out in the www... and I can say I know a Heather Rankin who is both in RE and music... from ActiveRain. ;-)
