Never on Sunday

Tournament of Roses Parade 2017 in PasadenaToday is Monday, January 4, 2016.

Still a relatively brand new year as far as years go.

A leap year too with a total of 366 days.

So why am I already thinking about 2017?

Well, in Pasadena it makes a difference.

The 2016 Tournament of Roses Parade, Rose Bowl Game and other related events are now history.   Grandstands along South Orange Grove and Colorado boulevards are being dismantled and soon everything will be back to normal.

So what’s this have to with 2017?

You see due to that extra day in February this year, New Year’s Day in 2017 will fall on a Sunday and the Tournament of Roses Parade and Rose Bowl football game are never played on a Sunday.

From the Frequently Asked Question section of the Tournament of Roses website:

The Tournament of Roses has had a “Never on Sunday” tradition since 1893, the first year since the beginning of the Tournament that New Year’s Day fell on a Sunday. Officials wanted to avoid frightening horses that would be tethered outside churches and thus interfering with worship services so the events were moved to the next day, January 2. Though horses are no longer tethered outside local churches, the tradition remains to this day.

So in 2017 --- the Tournament of Roses Parade and Rose Bowl will be held on Monday, January 2, 2017.

Happy New Year!   May 2016 be your best year yet!

Interesting, Michael.  Though, I don't think those horses are an issue any longer, but the tradition will continue.

Good morning Michael Jacobs,

Who would have guessed? Funny how traditions are carried over like that long after the original purpose has gone!! I guess we will know that 2017 Monday January 2nd will be the big day!!

Michael, well that is pretty interesting, and will be different not watching it on New Year's Day.   Those floats are so creative!

That is very interesting, I had never even thought about that.  I watch the Rose Bowl every year, but I have never paid attention to the day that it is happening, as it always feels like a weekend because of the holidays.

Thanks for stopping by and your comments regarding the Tournament of Roses tradition of no parade or football bowl game on Sunday.  I do think Troy Erickson is correct that the NFL may now have something to do why this tradition lives on.  They may be more powerful than churches in some circles.

Michael Jacobs Interesting tidbit of information on the Tournament oif Roses Parade and the reason for no Sunday parade. Let's face it; everyday in Pasadena is a 'Parade'!

Michael-This is valuable info and it is funny because many years ago there were many things you weren't allowed to do on a Sunday. Glad they are keeping the tradition.

Interesting.  I had never heard of this tradition.  Usually, they are rooted in something, if even that something is not really relevant today.
