It is time to take down your Christmas decorations. Tips and tricks.

Greetings,

Most people will be working on taking down their Christmas decorations between Christmas and the first weekend in January. Whenever you decide to take down your holiday decorations, use caution so that you don't damage your items and keep them in good condition. You want them in good condition so that they can be recycled and used the following year. It is wasteful to have your beautiful decorations only be used for a month out of the year and then discarded.

Christmas Trees- One thing you will need to get rid of is your Christmas tree if you have a live tree. Make sure you look into tree recycling services in your area.  Real trees are a renewable, recyclable resource, so it is important that they are recycled whenever possible. These trees will be recycled into a number of different resources like mulch for playgrounds, wildlife habitat and homeowner landscaping projects. The trees may no longer serve a purpose for holiday decorating, they can still serve as a valuable resource for our environment, so make sure to take the time to recycle!

Storing ornaments- "If you don't have an ornament's original packaging, wrap the piece in a resealable sandwich bag, then store it in a sturdy, well-padded box." Egg cartons are great for small ornaments. Stuff all the nooks and crannies with tissue paper saved from opened gifts. Make sure to "keep your fragile items together at the top of a box.

Christms lights- Always store colored lights in a dark place to keep the bulbs from fading (blues, greens, and purples fade faster than reds and yellows do). Wrap the string of lights around a can, and store extra bulbs and extension cords inside.

Christmas Candles- "Candles should be put away flat, out of light, and in a fairly cool area to prevent warping and preserve color.

Storing Wreaths & Decorations- Save the zippered garment bags you get when you buy a new suit or dress, and use them to protect bulky plastic figures, such as sleighs and reindeer or wreaths. Then hang the bags in a closet or on a nail in your attic.

Time to purge- Where there items that you did not use this year, were given to you or broke? Maybe it is time to donate them. Put them in a pile by your front door, so you will donate them in the next few days.

I hope these storing suggestions & recycling were helpful.

Many Blessings!

Jan lots of good ideas for de-decorating. I especially like the garmet bags and putting them to good use for Christmas stuff.  Happy New Year!

Great tips Jan Sohlman my tree and decorations come down day after Christmas, mainly because I'm so tired of it since it goes up on Thanksgiving Day or day after.

Great tips, Jan. Let me add two more for your next post on this:

1.  I wrap my candles in tissue paper to further protect them. I've had some decorative ones hold up beautifully for 20+ years that way.

2. As I have several trees, I mark my storage boxes very carefully so that all the items for specific trees, mantels, etc. are clearly marked.

I think that Marco Giancola was talking about a company that puts up outdoor lighting. Many of them keep the lights and store them for you year after year. Thanks for the comments Nina Hollander.

Jan, I finally have a good use for all those zippered garment bags that I have hidden away in my house!  What a great idea.  Thank you for the follow.  I look forward to reading more of your posts.

This is very good advice. Thanks for your tips.

In our area, the city picks up Christmas trees as part of the weekly recycling schedule.
