Snow Angel Program In Chatham-Kent
We haven't needed the Snow Angel Program as yet this winter but do not count your blessings too soon. Winter is not done with us yet.
There are many senior citizens in our community who don't have the financial resources to hire someone to shovel their walks or a friend or relative who is able and willing to assist. This can be a very big problem for some senior citizens, shut-ins or disabled individuals who live alone and need help, especially after a major snow fall. It can be the major reason that relatives resist the idea of independence for their loved ones.The occupant of the home cannot shovel themselves and some are very afraid of falling if the snow is not cleared. Tom Curtin, co-ordinator for the program said that those benefiting from the program rely on the service to allow them to get out of their homes, get to appointments or perhaps to allow care-givers access.
Snow Angel program is in its eight year and the commitment of the volunteers is to clear the sidewalk and or driveway of the homeowner within 24 hours of a major snowfall of five centimeters or 2 inches. The volunteers are mainly adults in the community who want to help but there are some students involved. Tim says that it is an excellent program for students who want to complete their community service commitment for graduation or for resume points, showing their willingness to give of themselves for the community.
