My First Hockey Post of the Season

Hopefully not my last.

Why the hockey post today?  Just because the San Jose Sharks beat the Calgary Flames in Game 7 and move on towards the greatest trophy in all sports, The Stanley Cup!

That's why.  (That and I have a Hockey Hangover, eh?)

scoreboard

For you non Hockey speaking readers here's what the cup looks like:

Mike and the Cup

A quick Hockey Primer for you:

  • 30 Teams compete during the season to be one of the 16 that enter the playoffs.
  • 8 teams in the East, 8 teams in the West.
  • Teams play the best of 7 in a series.  No Ties
  • There are 4 Series or rounds in the playoffs;
    1. Conference Quarterfinals
    2. Conference Semifinals
    3. Conference Finals
    4. Stanley Cup Finals
  • Lose 4 in a series and you're "playing golf".
  • Win 16 Games in the Playoffs and you  "Hoist the Cup!"

The Conference Quarterfinals ended last night.  We're now down to 8 teams.

In the East

The Montreal Canadians will play the Philadelphia Flyers

and the Pittsburgh Penguins will play the New York Rangers

In the West

the Detroit Red Wings will play the Colorado Avalanche

and the San Jose Sharks will play the Dallas Stars

If you are graphical in nature here's a quick little Bracket I made for my computer desktop.

round2

Ok, that's enough Hockey for now.  I have to get back to work.

Go Sharks!

10 Comments on My First Hockey Post of the Season

I was debating a hockey post today as well although it wouldn't be my first of the season - I had to post something on the trade deadline day - it was quite an exciting day here in Denver.  Go Avs!

Steve - Love it!  We didn't have such an exciting day here in SJ (at the deadline).  I'm a big Joe Sakic fan.  A big Scott Hannan fan.  Solid Defense! Somewhere in my files I have a picture of Tony Granato, me and his Sister Cammie.  Tony is a class act!.  Of course you also have Scott Parker.  Although I don't know how much action he'll see.

Jason - I am rooting for the Pens or the Rangers in the east.  How many people do you know that made a special trip to Rye NY, snuck into the practice arena, all just to pee in the same urinal as The Great One?

 One word,   Sydney!

Love the shots of Mario sitting in the press box.

Go Hockey!

Man ... The Bruins are out!  They got killed in game seven.....Guess I'll have to root for the Rangers...

Yea hockey!!   Rich did NCAA Basketball (Rock Chalk Jayhawk!!)   Others do football (Go Chiefs!)  I'm glad to see hockey.   I'm sure when October rolls around, the Baseball fans will be out. (No favorite team but I'm a big George Brett fan)

Mike...

Hopefully the Crosby kid will stand tall against the Rangers. I'm still a diehard Penguins fan!

Sandra - I'm always rooting for the Rangers (somewhere deep inside).  A Sharks / Rangers final would be just fine by me.

Kathy - Any sport, any hobby, as long as it provides a mental diversion and keeps us sane so we can do our best during the day at the office.

Darrell - In my house we have the A.B.D. Rule, "Anybody but Dallas".  you know for years I had this photo on the desktop of my PDA.

"I'm Brett Hull and Yes I did have my Toe in the Crease"   Loved Brett and the way he played.  Was never a Eddie Fan (even when he was a Shark).  This wasn't the fault of Dallas but more that of the NHL.  Worst ending to a season ever!  (except for Dallasians)

Richard - Crosby / Jagr - Good watching!

This is weird...

and

Coincidence?  I think not.

Hi, Mike!

Nice hockey post.  Say, is that cup upside down?  :D

I watched that entire game too, and normally the only sports I really follow is the fantastic New England Patriots!  Sharks Fever has got ahold of everyone, I think!
