There is a Right Way and Then . . .

Home Inspector with Complete Home Inspections, Inc. TN Lic#050

Folks just love to fool around with electricity - the one thing that will chi-tn.comelectrocute them or burn their home down. Nevertheless, some folks love to tinker or they think they are an electrician. [Oye! Veh!]
The inset is one example of how not to power a garbage disposal. The soft-sided conductor is not designed for exposed use as the sheathing material can be easily damaged and the female plug is designed for use on extension cords. Extension cords are temporary power conductors.
The correct way to have done this was to put the soft-sided conductor in a protective sheathing and connect it to an approved junction box with a single outlet receptacle. The conductor going to the disposal is okay as it is designed for this type of application.

Too many homeowners "assume" they know the right way to do all kinds of things that belong in the hands of a qualified or licensed contractor.

Hi Michael... I have absolutely no idea what it is you really said... but there are two things in a home I personally never fuss with and leave it to the professionals--electrical and plumbing. I just want to know it's done right and not how.

Top of the morning Michael.  That is exactly how it would look if I had done it.  That is why I do not mess with electric nor plumbing.  Thanks for the post.  Mark

That is the most common way that electricity is connected in basements or garages up here

Good Friday morning Michael.  More times than not people think they know what they're doing when working / dabbling with electricity.  Nothing to mess around with.

I just shake my head at some of the things homeowners do instead of having an improvement done correctly and professionally.

Hi Michael -  you can tell that this was jury rigged but the safety problem of fire or shock is something I can see and any fire inspector would see.  They are risking a lot.

Michael, I will not mess with anything that has electricity to it... we had an outside electrical outlet that wasn't working, when our electrician was here he found five outlets not working.... so he checked out the outside/inside ... all working now.

Michael electrical fires can do a lot of damage even from just the smoke they create.  My next door neighbors had an electrical fire last March and are now just able to get back into their house.

I see a lot of owner electrical handyman specials.  Very unwise and it will cost them much more money long term.

I had a sale fail just last month after a home inspection found handyman wiring projects throughout a home.  The seller kept referring to repairs as that was done by Mike Our handy man and he did not charge but five dollars to take care of that problem. Mike said "The roof was only two years old," the inspector said twenty, it was leaking in several areas and had photos to prove it.

We didn't walk away; we ran TeamChi - Complete Home Inspections, Inc.
