Have You Ever Thought About Getting A Real Job?

Have you ever thought about getting a real job? I’ve been asked this question more than once but, never from someone that used to be a real estate agent. There’s a first time for everything and over the holidays it came from someone who used to be an agent. At a holiday party I was making polite conversation and with that came asking this particular lady what she does for a living and vice versa. Right now she works part time as a receptionist and noted that it’s just a job but, it was her past that struck a chord with me.

She used to be an agent but, realized that then she needed to get a "real job" and asked if I’d ever thought about getting one too. I can be am a smart ass and told her that no I hadn’t because I prefer my real career in real estate and that I’d never get a job again. She looked perplexed and that led to a far more interesting conversation about the difference in a job and a career.

Let’s Compare A Job vs. A Career:

Job vs. Career

Real estate isn’t for everyone – not even close. She left the industry with the feeling that no one can make a “real” living in real estate. The more we talked the more I understood why she felt that way. She felt that real estate had wronged her because she went to the office Monday through Friday but, in 3 years only sold 3 houses. You don’t get paid to show up in real estate. Heck, sometimes you show up for months, do everything you possibly can and guess what? You don’t get paid. It wasn’t real estate the wronged her, it was a slew of factors that caused it to not work but, that’s a post for another time.

Real estate is my career, my passion, and my calling. I would never be satisfied to have a job again. A career takes years to build and you have to constantly improve your skills and adapt to continue to be the best at what you do no matter what industry you’re in. Anyone who has or has had a career whether it be as a real estate agent, doctor, nurse, lawyer, florist, hair stylist, singer, actor or anything else you can think of knows that you spend a lifetime working on your craft. It’s who you are and far more than just something you do to earn money.

I'm late to the party, but this is a great post, Amanda. Thanks for the comparison and the acknowledgment that you get out of your career what you put into it.

I am afraid I might have hurt her feelings.  Just because she couldn't make a successful career in real estate doesn't mean it's not a real job, just that she couldn't do it.

Tammy Lankford it might have done her some good to have them hurt. She was very bitter over it and it's been 4 years. Yikes!

Love what I do ... it's not job when it's your passion -- this is my second career and I've been in real estate 22 years and finding and learning new things every day. Never a dull moment.  I also have been asked "when are you going to find a real job?" I don't want a job ... I was to make a difference.

I have seen this happen many times in the past, a Realtor works hard and has very low success. I don't see how every licensed agent can be a top producer.

I do wonder what I am going to do when I grow up.  In my life I have worked at a number of different things.  I have only had real success when I worked for myself or on commission.  I do not enjoy punching a clock or being tied to a desk.  So I guess when people see me sleeping in at times or doing fun stuff in the middle of the week they do not understand that I have late nights at my desk and work lots of weekends.

A job is a position where you trade your time for money from your employer, essentially, you're a slave and as a slave, you are not paid first, however, you could still be a slave and have a career too.

Funny you got asked that question. I used to sell real estate. 18 yrs ! I used to get that question all the time.  In 2007 I had a stroke. Now I am a right Brain thinker. It's funny - After the stroke I did'nt get that rush ,whenever I did a deal. That was the one thing that kept me going after all those years.  I knew I had to change professions.

I became a real estate photographer!

Good food for thought.

Real estate will be my third career, and each time I've known it was time to move on when the prior career became "just a job". First I had a 14-year career in the veterinary world starting as an assistant, then as a licensed technician, and then office manager, constantly moving up and out until burnout hit.

I'm now looking to end a 19+-year career climb in IT which has lately become just a job I can't wait to escape. Sadly, that job will need to linger another year or two at least. {sigh} Sure wish I could drop it cold turkey and jump 100% into real estate. :0)

This is a great post! I have had a "real jobs" and 'career". My "real" jobs were boring and very stressful. Those were stuck behind a switch board where I was constantly cursed at and had to listen to it or get fired. The next one was stuck in a cubicle and process and file papers. Both jobs, I got tired of getting cursed at and lied about and therefore was fired. My careers, hairdressing and real estate became my real jobs for me. And I don't have to ask for a bathroom / "necessary" break.

Amen!  I can't imagine leaving real estate for a "job."  I'd rather drive a milk truck than get a job, but i guess that is a job!

I previously had a "Job."  Sometimes I wish I had that regular paycheck, but the past 27 years I have had a career - real estate.

Nothing regular about real estate!

I laugh because i always say I don't ever wanna get a real job!  Because I don't consider real estate working- I know it is work but love it and would not ever want to sit behind a desk 9-5...  I love being able to have freedom, take off and vacation when I want etc.. Meet new people.

Hi Amanda...I've had "jobs" that have been every bit as interesting and exciting as my career in real estate. One was as the Community Liaison Officer (CLO), a member of the Ambassador's Team at the Embassy in Mogadishu, Somalia.

I really like real estate and have been doing it since 1986 but I've also loved some of the other jobs I've had. I'm thankful for that.

Really poignant post. I get a call about every month from someone wanting to be a Realtor. Most people don't realize it is a Career not a job and it is starting a business. Few people are ready to start a business and have the capitol to survive until that business can make money.

Hello Amanda, RE is not for the weak! I've seen many folks try and give up too quickly. Generally it's because they had unrealistic expectations and they were not financially prepared for the start up.

Good Morning Donna, I couldn't agree more. You have to have a financial cushion when you get started and know that months of work are needed before you close a transaction. Thank you for stopping by!

Have you heard anything about the platform indeed? It seems to me that this is a good option for those who are looking for work now. I can also recommend that you check out the article about indeed search job, which might come in handy if you want to understand how this resource works. I hope it will come in handy for you.
