According to a study published in Psychology Today, it takes 66 days, on average, to establish a new, positive habit. Sometimes longer!

Welcome to 2016! As we get down to business in the New Year, it’s a great time to embrace new ideas for better results. Whether you wish to improve your health or your real estate business, these 7 suggestions can help!

1. According to a recent article in Business Insider, the best way to make a new goal stick, is to define it as a positive action. For example, instead of making a goal of “losing 20 pounds” you should concentrate on a positive process that makes the goal attainable. Such as:

  • Eating a salad for lunch or dinner every day
  • Drinking one glass of water before each meal
  • Dancing to your favorite music for 20 minutes each night

Sounds much more fun, doesn’t it? While it’s OK to have a benchmark number in mind for weight loss, concentrating on the number can create stress. In turn, stress makes you more likely to cave in and eat that hidden stash of Oreos.

2. Another way to look at goals is from the benefit perspective. If your goal is a financial one – to pay off debt, or increase income – picture your new lifestyle once you reach the goal. Maybe this time next year, you will be vacationing in Florida! Or, you’ll be able to work less, and spend more time with your family. Think about what really matters to you, and create your goals accordingly.

3. Be sure to put measurable actions behind each goal. If you want more income, you may need more listings! Create an action plan to cold-call more homeowners, and to contact prior clients. Make a point of doing some face-to-face networking. Ask for business!

4. Now, the tricky part. According to a study published in Psychology Today, it takes 66 days, on average, to establish a new, positive habit. Sometimes longer! There is a misconception that a new habit can be formed in three weeks, but unfortunately that’s rarely the case. You’ll need to keep perseverance in mind!

5. To help yourself stay on track, find an accountability partner who will support and encourage you. Depending on your goals and the relationship dynamics, the right person for the job could be a spouse or other relative, or a friend, or a managing broker.

6. If you’re uncomfortable sharing your goals with others, keep a journal. Log your goals and your actions towards them. Record efforts, record results. Review. Revise actions as needed.

7. Throughout the year, give yourself permission to start over. This isn’t the same thing as failing! The only true failure comes from never making the effort.

Are you dancing Roy Kelley ?  Nor sure that would be me either but I would walk 20-40 minutes per day.  Nice reblog.

Had heard through the years, 'Thirty days to establish a positive habit.'  Perhaps adding a few days more (66 +) including the perseverance will be more successful. I like Endre Barath, Jr.'s thought/comment /suggestion:  blogging on Active Rain.  Roy Kelley -  hey, that might be a good choice for me?!? Hahahaha..

Also liked - 'It is alright to start over, forgive yourself, and not feel a failure.'

We have very cold weather in Maryland for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day activities.

The City of Gaithersburg offices and facilities are closed with the exception of the Aquatic Center which will be open from 5:15 to 8:30 p.m.

The Montgomery County public schools, libraries and liquor stores are closed today.
