Benjamin
Thanks for stopping by and taking time out of your day to read my post. My intent is to put a smile on your face. Hopefully you’ll go away with some information you may have forgotten about or did not know. Now sit back and enjoy the post for the day.
Benjamin was born in Byberry, Pennsylvania back in 1746 to John and Susanna. At the age of 6 his father died and his mother at 8 sent him to live with his and uncle. He and his brother Jacob attended school in Cecil County, Maryland, then onto the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts. From 1766 to 1768 he attended the University of Edinburgh and graduated with a M.D. degree.
He returned to the Colonies in 1769 at 24 and opened a medical practice in Philadelphia. You may know him better as Benjamin Rush, he signed the Deceleration of Independence, was active in the Sons of Liberty, elected to attend the Continental Congress. Thomas Payne would consult Benjamin while writing Common Sense.
Just for some more information he also wrote the first American textbook on chemistry. He also served as treasurer of the U.S. Mint and was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Not that, that was enough he also taught Meriwether Lewis about the frontier illnesses for their famous expedition. he was against slavery and advocated that women be included in the art of vocal music, dancing, sciences, bookkeeping, history and moral philosophy. A man way ahead of his time for sure. Thus ends my story for today.
