Girlfriends are life sustaining!
Sorry, guys, this one isn't for you. Some of us, as we get older, realize that we might outlive our male spouses. We don't really want to think like that in our rational minds, but IT HAPPENS. Cultivating and KEEPING those girlfriend relationships are key in keeping you moving through your days, your weeks, your years, after losing your beloved husband.
There are several women friends of mine that have lost their spouses and live out here in the netherworld called Fishhawk Lake. Not exactly a thriving metropolis. I had been a single woman until almost the age of 45 (gasp!) before marrying for the first time (and only time, my husband likes to quickly add!). You either tow the line, flourish or die on the vine by being alone. And out here, especially during the fall and winter months, it seems like you are very
alone.
What to do? Well, you could wallow. OR, you could pick up the phone and invite a couple of great girlfriends over! Wine, small snacks, even martinis and music can do the trick to immediately change your atmosphere from one of too much solitude to a small PARTY!
Girlfriends are VITAL to our sanity. We can dish, be silly, eat (with no guilt), talk about dramas, little and big and know that the women we are with understand. We can wander off track, get momentarily weird, dump our personal garbage and it's a safe place, because we don't have to explain it. They get it. And they don't fault us for our little moments of consternation and woe.
Maybe it's a day trip into town we need, to shake off the country living and get some shopping done in urbania. Maybe it's time to just go somewhere. Or set up a girls night out (or in) to kick up our heels with no strings attached! These times become memories to add to those we've spent with our galpals so far. There's nothing really like it. You can't buy it in some highend store. You can't manufacture this stuff. It soothes the savage beastess. Just one of the many wonders of our community at Fishhawk Lake.
This one's for all of my girlfriends who love me warts and all!
