Public or Military Schools

By

The boob tube news was on while eating dinner last night and the subject was brought up about Public or Military schools being brought to Rochester, New York to increase the on time graduation rate. At the moment the graduation rate is running at a stagnant 51%.

The consensus is that a Military School has an on time graduation rate of 97% and a dropout rate of 20% and a cost of +/- of $10,000 per student compared to +/- of $22,000 in the public school.

Another reason is taxes and a state that is trying to cut spending to education as it is to costly and there is a program for home owner's called STAR (State Tax Relief Program) they would like to see go away and save the state million's each year.

The City School Board seems to be in favor of the program and seeing the the percentages of graduation as well as truancy it probably would be better and teach some of the younger generation discipline as well as a program to make them better in the workplace and most importantly decrease taxes in  the area as well as the state.

Good morning Raymond.  Maybe it is time to look towards a different way of education.  Sounds like the Military school  is a good alternative.

Good morning Ray. Military school is a good alternative for some kids, but it doesn't necessarily mean that the child will take advantage of the opportunity.

Endre Barath, Jr. Just sayin it cannot hurt.

James Dray I think so

Joe Petrowsky The dropout rate at the military type school is only 20%; a lot higher in the public schools.

Yicks....Our area doesn't have the lowet taxes..but people move here and stay here often because of the schools...seems like there is not the vision of the bigger picture in place.

Raymond-it's too bad that we have to rely on military schools to discipline our children but it is what it is. We have to find some way to instill those values in them when they're young or risk losing even more of them.

You still have a boob tube.  Everything around here is flat screen now.  Just a little humor!

Now to the serious stuff....They need to do something about the lack of ambition in the public schools. They don't have an education, so they can't get a job to buy food or pay rent, so they rob steal and whatever else they do to get money.  I won't even get into the drugs subject.

Hi Raymond.  I'm not sure if this will work or not as I think the education results are more a result of the family and its support than the type of school attended.

Noah Seidenberg Kathy Streib I agree and thank you

Larry Johnston It may be flat but it will always be a boob tube to me; I agree with the rest of your statement wholeheartedly.

Gabe Sanders That would be another sore subject!

We do need more discipline these days.  I agree with Kathy Streib that we shouldn't have to rely on military schools to do the job. Whatever happened to parents doing it????

Good morning Raymond E. Camp,

An interesting topic..it is a shame we have to rely on military schools rather than parents instilling proper values. Military school is a good alternative for some kids, but it doesn't necessarily mean that the child will take advantage of the opportunity. It might worth a shot hope the administrators try it out.
