The Untapped Green Market

Recently it has become evident that the American appetite for green technology and consumer products is massively under attended. The 2007 National Technology Readiness Survey (NTRS) revealed this vital fact. Annually the Center for Excellence in Service at UM's School of business and technology sponsors a survey on green technology and how interested adults are therein. The firm Rockbridge Associates Inc, who conducted the survey for UM, ascertained that 71% of the adults in the United States are interested in green technology. The unfortunate fact is that there is a significant gap between products available and what people would say they would like to own. The participants were measured based on interest level for each green product category against calculated market value which is based on the median sales price.

The participants are classified in the following segments:

  • based on the commitment they expressed in green technologies and their application to daily life
  • Influence on others to become green
  • skepticisms about green technologies
  • interest in the green technologies

The NTRS is identified the portion of the market that is most commitment to the environment, about 10% of adult consumers. These people are very dedicated to the environment and the technology that enhance living while being positive for the earth. These people are dubbed “Green Tech Leaders”, as such they are the ones often approached by friends and coworkers for advice on the subject. The industry should be designing with these “Green Tech Leaders” in mind. Starting with this group would open the industry to a potential influx of more than 100 million dollars. Not to mention the benefits it would have world wide.

What else can you say, but go GREEN!
