Unprofessionally Finished Is, Well, Unprofessionally Finished.

Despite what the feature list touts, unprofessionally finished is, well, unprofessionally finished.

When the seller lists things as "improvements," and "upgrades," and "featuring...", the list should point to things that truly are those things.

One of the "features" in this condo was the "new flooring throughout!"

I could see in the laundry room that this new flooring, a Pergo product, was laid directly over the old flooring, another Pergo product.

That isn't exactly how you do it.

There were gaps between the abutted edges, some wider than 1/8".

Pergo is a floating floor, meaning it is glued together such that the pieces combine to create a monolithic sheet, and it is tied down at the edges with various moldings and covers.

All over the unit the edges looked like this photo.  It was quite unimpressive.

Again, if something is to be called a "feature," and an "upgrade," and an "improvement," it really should be all of those things!  Clearly all of what had happened in the unit was done by the homeowner or his friends.  Nothing looked at all professionally done.

Hence the title of the post!

My recommendation:  "features" that create doubt and a less-than-impressive feeling are not features at all.  Things should look good!  Things should be done right!  Few products look good or last long when they are not installed properly.  And when they are visible and out front for all to see it might be best not to tout them to seem as what they are NOT!

Good morning Jay Markanich . It looks as if somebody went out to lunch and never came back. It happens, you know . . .

And in this house, it was over and over and over Michael.  Methinks that adds up to many lunches.

Jay, You'd have loved the flip house I went to yesterday.  Nicely finished bath added in the lower level, but you better not be too tall!  With the elevated floor to step into the shower and the low ceiling there might have been 6' 6"  (and I'm probably being generous by 2-3") from shower floor to ceiling (which I suspect was regular drywall and not green backed), and plenty of lighting with the recessed light in the shower ceiling, and since it was open to the air with no waterproof cover I don't want to think about what happens to the first person to use the shower and splash water up into the light.

I hate that flooring, not only is it cheap looking but when you walk on it it sounds hollow. I would call it a downgrade...lol

Bliz - the floor was elevated to accommodate the new shower drain line, as the shower was not there originally.  That ceiling is probably too low for the codes in that area.  I am not sure of the height of a light fixture over a shower, but I think around 8' is the lowest allowed.  It may be higher.  Permits?  Or, as the SS would say, "Paaperz?"

It's not an upgrade for me either Fred.  I am partial to hardwoods, but they can't be put in certain places.  If not, engineered hardwood is a good alternative IMO.

Unfortunately, someone not as well informed and not using a professional such as yourself will think this looks great and buy the property.  It's sad what people get away with these days.

They actually tried as much as possible to hide the edges behind furniture Stephen.  Yeah, I won't notice...

Gotta love the DIY jobs that sellers think are all that and a bag of chips.  Nope.  A sub-standard job is just begging to be replaced and done RIGHT, so not a feature at all.

My clients were actually upset about it and wanted a special mention in the report, Chris Ann!
