In our last article, Pro and Cons of Home Security Systems, we discussed the
pros and cons of having a system installed.
But before you decide on purchasing a system, it would be a good idea to make an assessment, as to what would be beneficial for your home.
~First, take a look inside and out of your house. Think of areas that a potential intruder may be able
to gain entry into your home. Are windows, doors, and basement entrances secure?
~What kind of blind spots do you have on your property and around your house? Shrubs, fences,
and outbuildings should be inspected thoroughly.
~If you have a large piece of property, you should map out the areas around your home. The
environment, etc; can affect how an intruder gains entry to your property and home.
~How long would it take emergency services to respond to your call. If you live farther away
from emergency services, it may affect the local authorities ability to stop a crime in progress.
You many not have realized this but there are ways to be proactive in securing your home:
~Make sure all your windows and doors are locked at night and when you are away. This may
seem like common sense, but you would be surprised at how many people forget to check.
~If you don’t have a neighborhood watch in your area, consider organizing one with your neighbors.
~Check with your local police station to see if they have home security seminars and attend a few.
You have the potential of learning other ways to protect your home that you may not have considered.
~If you have a dog that is good at protecting your home, make sure he is able to guard the areas
that a potential intruder may enter.
Next up, we will explore the different types of security systems you can choose from.
