Javelina Roam Sedona Real Estate

Many people think that javelina are hairy pigs. They are not. Collard Peccary is what they are called and are the only wild 'pig like' animal found in the USA. Wild boar are found on Catalina Island off the coast of Southern California. Javelina usually travel in groups small or large. I have seen as many as 50 grazing on grass grubs. We also have a single Javie come by that we nickname "Harold".

The javelina can make a real mess of your garden areas. Like pigs, they eat just about anything. We have gates in out courtyard and every once in awhile, I would come home to roots and flower pots all over the courtyard. I finally saw a javelina come through the 4 inch opening in the gate! Once I put up rabbit wire, no more problems.

In the summer, they borrow a shallow trench to get to the cool dirt under the Pinon Pine, Juniper and Arizona Cypress behind our home. They also use this area for birthing. Many times we have gone outside to hear what sound like a hurt javelina, only to find a baby or two the next day.

As you watch the video, the javelina look very docile, don't let that fool you! They can go after each other if one of the other navies comes after their food.

One more thing about javelina. They have a unique order that you can smell many yards away. After a rain the smell is even more pungent! In Sedona, homes have to be built to allow wild animals to travel.

Sheri it's quite the shock to folks that have never experienced these critters before - they can be so destructive!!  We had to deal with them on a listing a few years back - and it was intereting to say the least!  Never knew what we'd find on any particular day!

Hi Anna Banana Kruchten - These Javelina actually make trails and one of these trails concerned a neighbor who thought somebody was constructing a trail but she could not catch them! She finally realized it was the Javelina!!

They come right to my front door. You need the right type of landscaping otherwise kiss you new plants goodbye. They are destructive, and can be aggressive. I have been chased by javelinas more than once!

I like to see animals in their own habitats, and hope that the human animals don't kill them all.  We have Nutria here in the Pacific NW.  Very similiar to Beavers, but they don't have the flattened tail.

Sheri Sperry - MCNE®

Hi Carla Muss-Jacobs, Principal Broker/Owner - I never heard of Nutria, I will google them! I like the fact that animals can roam through our neigborhood - we just have to be careful.  We get mule deer, whitetail deer, bobcats, coyote, fox, also.  Whitetail deer, racoons and bobcats are the only animals I have seen in our fenced in backyard! In an urban neighborhood this would not be good.

Sheri, before you know it, somebody is going to figure out a way to make these trendy pets!  Not as cute as Labradoodles, and it sounds like they could get pretty destructive inside a house.  But Harold?  Once you give the little guy a name, it could get dangerous!

Jan 22, 2016 03:17 AM
Sheri Sperry - MCNE®

Hi Patricia - you wouldn't want them for pets, they have a real pecular odor and it gets really bad when they get wet!!

I have seen a wild boar, but not a javelina.  When you stated they have an odor and are destructive.... I am glad we don't have them here.

Rebecca Gaujot, the Go To Realtor® - I think that there are a lot of neighbors that feel the same way as you.  Especially those who have dogs. They have to keep their dogs on a tight leash when walking them!

Very interesting.   I have never seen that variety of pig before.

Hi Rob Arnold - They are very, very distant relatives of the pig.  The main similarity is their snout. It is very sensitive. Their sight is terrible. They run away from you because they don't see well.

Sheri- We used to have one (stuffed) over our mantle in Houston.  Ugh... it was so ugly.  I think Larry was in South Texas when he got it.

Hi Kathy Streib - We have a Mexican restaurant called the Javelina Cantina and they have lots of different displays.  One is a stuffed head (not sure if it is real) over the fireplace.

These are really cute. I've never seen one before so that was a real treat! When I looked at home on the Big Island, some up the hill had low-height electronic fences hooked up to some sort of generator that shocked wild pigs to keep them out of their yards. Owie.

Elizabeth Weintraub Sacramento Real Estate Agent, Top 1% of Lyon Agents - When you see these critters, you either like them or you don't!  Because they like to eat most anything you plant, you either have to stay completely with natural landscape or have a fence of some kind. I love to garden so my courtyard is completely enclosed....but we still can get raccoons!!!

Sheri - We have lived in Arizona for almost 20 years now, and I have only seen Javelina once. It was around midnight, after our son just finished a baseball game, and there were several Javelina crossing the road in front of us.

Women of Westchester Working Together - For some people, Javelina can be all that you mentioned.  But, we have learned to live with them and enjoy seeing them and just like the smells on a farm, you get used to it. If the wind is blowing just right, you can't even smell them!!

Sheri,

I have never heard of these animals before.  As you said, they do look a lot like pigs and can see why they can be mistaken for one.

Thanks for the info on these animals.

Hi Brigita McKelvie - They are very common in the southwest especially AZ but NM and TX as well!  They are migrating from South America and in Arizona moving northwest bypassing Flagstaff but getting close to Kingman. They also bypass more urban areas such as some of Phoenix.

They are interesting looking critters .... I like that homes have to be built to allow wild animals to travel. After all, it is their home too and we must share.

Jan 23, 2016 07:36 AM

Hi Kathleen Daniels - We have building envelopes and you can't even have a fence outside the envelope. So, if you want a fenced area it means the home has fit within the building envelope. This allows animals to roam free between homes!

I'm so glad Tony and Suzanne Marriott, Associate Brokers re-blogged this post! I did not see this one and it is so interesting. I have not seen Javelina before! We do have feral hogs and they can be very destructive. Loved the video!

Thank you Dorie Dillard - These guys can dig for grubs in your grass and eat your flowers. They just pull the flowers out from the roots and drag them across the yard. I used to have "visitors" in my courtyard until I put up mesh screen on the gate.
