I've been working on my web site rankings as of late. My site is weeks new and under construction.      homesearchnovascotia.com   is the name and its designed to do just that. Sell Nova Scotia! Both condos and oceanfront.

It's a Point2 site (professional) and is getting noticed already!

Here is a challenge to you all!  We all need links! The amount of links from other web sites improves your overall rating for web searches. If you put a link to my web site I will put a reciprocal link to yours from mine. Win win !

Please let me know your website address.  And as a bonus -- I will comment on your blog as well.

Thank You all!

One way links increase your rankings... only if they are from other respected sites.  Link trades don't do that much.

BTW, I get to talk with one of NS favored sons each week while our kids learn to ice skate together...

If your site has not been active for a long time, I would register a name with the words "nova scotia" in it or something more descriptive of what you are actually doing.  Also drop the 'www.'  There is absolutely no need for it, and from a stylistic point, it is passe.  Your current name is really not all that descriptive.  Don't feel bad - been there myself.  You could do yourself a huge SEO favor by picking a better name, and it appears you still have time!

PS - Women are REALLY good at picking out names.  I just think they are way smarter than men when it comes to targeting a market with a catchy name.  So ask your wife, girlfiend, daughter, coworker for some help :D

PPS - Lane is right about the links.  For starter links, pony up $300 bucks for Yahoo's directory.  There are others as well, but Yahoo is probably #1 on the list. Then concentrate on creating backlinks because you have compelling content on your site.

Lane - After Dan's Remarks , I 've taken a poll at the office and decided to get a proper domain name.

After all - whats going to come up on a search? I've already searched and have one in mind.

Paul -

  • Try to register a name with descriptive words in the domain name.  For example, novascotiacondos.com or novascotiahomes.net.  Both are probably already taken, but the idea is to use words in the url that people will use in their search query.
  • The other really important factor is to be sure that the title tags reflect your main keywords for that page.  For example, the title of your main page should be something like "Nova Scotia Condos".  This is what will be displayed (what people will see) in Google along with whatever description you include in your meta data.
  • I agree about not using www.  If you want to use it, fine, but do not feel that you have to use it.  Plus, it's 3 less letters to type.
  • If you decide to change to a new domain name, you can always redirect the old traffic to the new domain name.

Best of luck with your new site!

OK - the new domain is        homesearchnovascotia.com

The old domain still works and will point to the new site.  This way I'm not limiting myself to condos or specialty homes.  Thanks for the feedback! It's like I can rely on good advice in times of need .

Hi Paul,

I agree with the link exchange comments. Now this is just my opinion, but if I was starting a new web presence it would be built around a blog. You could have your own blog hosted on godaddy.com for a lot less than point2 professional. And the blogsite/website would be be all yours.

Paul,

I agree with Larry on the blog.  In my market, there are a number of blog sites that are on the first page of some major search engines.  At the very least, keep an up to date blog on your site, don't just link a blog from blogspot or something to it.  Make sure it is hosted on your site.  That way the spiders will notice the up to date content on your site.
